hey good people!

i'm using a compaq presario 2210 that keeps turning itself off and restarting upon trying to use the laptop. i turn it on and it allows me to log in (and load up the desktop) and then within approx. 45 seconds to 1 minute it will flash up (too quickly for me to read or note any of it down) a blue dos screen with some wording on and then it restarts and the same cycle happens all over again? it's really frustrating!!!

what i've tried so far is to load up in safe mode and attempt to system restore to an earlier point - this has failed on each occasion.

my brother has been using the laptop mostly and he says that he was downloading an AVG update when it froze - the problem has been happening ever since. he has data on there which he doesnt want to lose so i'm holding off using the recovery cd's so far

the laptop has windows xp home edition (service pack 1) running as its o/s

i would be eternally grateful for any help offered!!!

To stop the restart, so you can read the error message, try this. Go to My computer, right cllck on it, and select Properties.select the "advanced tab. under Startup and recovery, go to Settings, and clear the checkmark "Automatically restart".

thanks dave, that worked and allowed me to jot the whole of thee message down, it reads:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUEST

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If your problem continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select safe mode.

i did try removing AVG in safe mode but that didn't resolve the problem, grateful for any further help anyone can offer!

Do you have Norton installed? The only reference to the MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUEST error seems to involve it.

hiya,

yeah, i think a trial version of norton anti virus came pre installed with the laptop - it does ask you to update your subcription when you turn it on - do i need to remove norton in safe mode?

I would suggest removal in Normal mode, and then using the removal tool from the Symantec website.

ah, i cant remove it in normal mode dave, because the pc reaches the blue screen message and stays there (due to turning off automatic restart). it wont even allow me to remove norton anti virus 200 in safe mode due to the windows installer service being inaccessible in safe mode.

It shows the same blue screen and same message and keeps on restarting.

I'm not sure of the OP is still having the problem or not, but the closest I could find on the MS support site was http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935192. The file it seems to be changing is usbhub.sys (which I assume is a system file for talking to or controlling the USB hubs connected to the motherboard or system). That article, and others for the same error in Win2k all point to the problem being caused by software, and almost always drivers or in that particular situation a Windows XP hotfix for battery life on a notebook.

thereddevil: In order to get to the BIOS on a Dell system, press the F2 key at the Dell splash screen just after powering on the computer. Without knowing the exact model of Inspiron you purchased I can't give you detailed instructions on how to get to the memory settings, but the BIOS settings are pretty easy to figure out. If you are still having the problem, and can post the model of Dell notebook you are using I can give you better information on where the settings are in the BIOS.

If you have any questions for me I'll be happy to answer them.

Hi all,

unfortunately i'm still having problems with this :(

is it worth me attempting to disable shadowing and caching in the BIOS as suggested in the error message? how would i go about doing this?

any help would be most appreciated...i'm really desperate to get it back up and running.
