Please download CCleaner and save it to your desktop.

• Run the CCleaner installer.
  
• During installation process, please UNCHECK "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar".
  
• Please do NOT run a scan yet!

Now, open CCleaner:

• Click the "Windows" tab.
  
• Select the following:
  • Check everything under the "Internet Explorer" section.
    
  • Check everything under the "Windows Explorer" section.
    
  • Check everything under the "System" section.
    
  • Check ONLY "Old Prefetch data" under the "Advanced" section.
  
  
• Then, click the "Applications" tab:
  • CHECK everything there.
  
  
• Next, click the "Options" button in the left pane, then click the "Advanced" button:
  • CHECK : "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  
  
• Next, click the "Cleaner" button in the left pane, then click the "Run Cleaner" button (bottom right), click "OK" at the prompt.
  
• When done, please exit CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the "Issues" button in the left pane. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don’t know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.


After that, restart your computer a couple times, post a fresh HijackThis log, and let me know how things are running now.

well, running CCleaner seems to have deleted a ton of files (including some of the cookies that keep my user names etc - but no worries). However, now on each reboot of my machine the first time I click Start after a restart I get an error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" After I dismiss the error dialog box (clicking Send or Don't Send) the desktop refreshes and then clicking Start works fine.

UPDATE: Actually I just got the same error and refresh while opening an Internet Explorer window.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode (tap the F8 key just before Windows starts to load and select the Safe Mode option from the menu), and see if the same thing occurs. Restart your computer back into Normal Mode and see if it still happens.

Yep looks like we're done here.

Good work. Your log appears to be clean!

Now that your computer seems to be in proper working order, please take the following steps to help prevent reinfection:

1) If you do not have one, it is vital that you have a firewall. The one that comes with Windows XP is not sufficient in that it only checks incoming data. I recommend selecting one of the following free firewalls. Be sure to only install one.

Kerio
Comodo
Outpost

2) Download and install Spybot-Search & Destroy, which has great features (specifically Immunization and TeaTimer) that help prevent malware from getting on your computer. Also a great scanner for weekly checks of the health of your system.

3) Download and install IE-Spyad, which will place over 5000 'bad' sites on your Internet Explorer Restricted List. A tutorial on it can be found here.

4) Make sure your programs are up to date! Older versions may contain security risks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run Secunia's Software Inspector.

5) Go to Windows Update frequently to get all of the latest updates (security or otherwise) for Windows.

6) Be sure to update your Antivirus and Antispyware programs often!
