Hello Jedi

Thanks so much for your patients. Just to up date you, my sister complained of further sluggishness with frequent security alerts. I discovered 'total security' malware had been downloaded on to the PC but thankfully after running malwarebytes the issue appears to be sorted.

I have the further details you required regarding the PC's virtual memory:-

Recommended: 286MB

Currently allocated: 256MB

Hi again,

I know you'll have to travel so I'll give you a couple of things to do. Firstly, I want to double-check the PC is clean:

Download the latest version of Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool
  • Close all other applications and double-click and run the installer.
  • When AVPTool starts, select all the scanable items except for CD-ROM drives and click the Scan button.
  • If malware is detected, place a checkmark in the Apply to all box, and click the Delete button (or Disinfect if the button is active).
  • After the scan finishes, if any threat remains in the Scan window (Red exclamation point), click the Neutralize all button
  • In the window that opens, place a checkmark in the Apply to all box, and click the Delete button (or Disinfect if the button is active).
  • If advised that a special disinfection procedure is required which demands system reboot: click the Ok button to close the window.
  • In the Scan window click the Reports button and select Save to file.
  • Name the report AVPT.txt, and save it to the Desktop.
  • Close AVPTool.
  • You will be prompted if you want to uninstall the program; click Yes.
  • You will then be prompted that to complete the uninstallation, the computer must be restarted. Select Yes to restart the system.
  • Copy and paste the first part of the report (Detected) that you saved in your next reply. Do not include the longer list marked Events.

Next:
Download GMER from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it to Desktop.

Please close any open programs/windows!

Open the program and click on the Rootkit/Malware tab.

Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, apart from 'Show All'.

Click on Scan (1).

When the scan has run click Copy (2), copy the scan results and save them to post here.
Next:

OK, next step is to run some tests on the system, I don't know how much RAM there is on that PC but it's not enough by the look of it.
Please register (it's free, don't worry) with PCPitStop and run the full tests here. When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Is will be called PCPitStop OverDrive Tests Overview. Copy the URL of this page and post it here for me.

OK, no problem. Can you also do this:

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then press ENTER.

Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance click Settings.

Click the Advanced tab, and then under Virtual memory click Change.

Click on Custom Size.

In the Initial Size box enter 256
In the Maximum Size box enter 286

Click Set > OK and restart the PC. This may remove the 'virtual memory too low' message, but it's only a stop-gap, in the longer term this PC needs more RAM.
