Hi again,
Do Start > Run and type in chkdsk /r (note the space between k and /) and hit OK. You will be prompted to restart, please do so and allow the disk check to run, it may take some time so don't do it when you need to use your PC.
Next:
Please go to Start -> Run -> and type in cmd and press Enter. At the command prompt type
sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested. Then please restart your computer.
Can you use Search now?

Try it, if it calls for the CD then cancel the scan.

Hi oceandweller
Jedi is away for a while so I'll assist you while he is gone.
Download Dial-a-fix from here:
http://wiki.djlizard...tandard_version
(on the right-hand side of the page)
Unzip it to your desktop.
Open the dial-a-fix.exe and Check "Fix Windows Installer" under: MSI
Then click the Go button.
Now open Windows Search and try to locate AcPrfMgrSvc.exe and if found scan the file at http://www.virustotal.com and post the results.
Do you still get the Windows Installer opening when you try to search?
Were you able to locate AcPrfMgrSvc.exe?
If you were still unable to search, try this:
Go to Start > Run, and enter the text cmd and click OK.
In the Command Window that opens, type the following text and hit Enter:
CD\
Then type the following and hit Enter:
dir AcPrfMgrSvc.exe /s /a
That should show you a listing of every instance of the file AcPrfMgrSvc.exe on your system.
Were you able to locate AcPrfMgrSvc.exe? If you were, now scan the file at VirusTotal and post the results. Also please let me know if you still have the Windows Installer window opening, and any other errors you encountered.

Thanks for helping out.
I downloaded dial-a-fix, but whenever I tried to use the exe file my computer would freeze up. Once I clicked on it, it would freeze up right away without opening up anything. I didn't have any other programs open. I have PC Tools Firewall Plus and Avira AntiVir running in the background.

Let's try this.
Disconnect from the Internet (pull the connection cable).
Close all running programs, including your PC Tools Firewall Plus and Avira AntiVir.
Now see if you can run Dial-a-fix.
Were you able to locate AcPrfMgrSvc.exe and scan it at VirusTotal, or was it not found?
Was running Dial-a-fix successful this time?

Hi again,
Do Start > Run and type in services.msc and press OK.
Scroll through the services and tell me if this:
