Hello,

I have had a number of strange issues over the last couple months involving e-mails getting received by people they were not intended for, often with embarrassing results. I also believe that someone may be accessing my e-mail remotely, but I have changed passwords repeatedly to no avail. This has been a problem with 2 different web-based accounts (Yahoo and Gmail). So, I suspect that perhaps my pc itself has been hijacked, as I cannot figure out how anyone would otherwise be doing this. Could someone please take a look at these log files and see if everything looks okay or not? My theory is that someone I know may be playing some sick "practical jokes" on me. I greatly appreciate any assistance!

Hi jacket315 and Welcome to SWI

Sorry it has taken so long to get to you, but the board has been very busy lately, and all the Helpers here are volunteers.

I suggest printing out each set of instructions and reading the entire post before proceeding. It will make following them easier. Please follow the directions in the order listed.

I don't dee anything wrong in your HijackThis log, so we'll dig a bit further.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Private Data).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • If the program won't start, go to MBAM's program folder (normally C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware), rename mbam.exe to a random file name (keep the .exe extension) and double-click on it to start the program.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In Internet Explorer, please run the BitDefender online scan at BitDefender.com
You will need to allow an ActiveX control to install for the scan to run.
Leave the scanning options at default and press "click here to scan"
When finished scanning, click on "click here to export the scan report"
Save it to your desktop, at "file name" type in "bdscan" then click save.
Please post the log in your next reply.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please post a new HijackThis log, the log from MBAM, the log from BitDefender's online scan, the log from Security Check (checkup.txt), and note any errors encountered.

From the BitDefender log you were at one time infected with malware, to include a backdoor trojan. There may still be malware present though, your copy of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is outdated, both the program itself, and the database.

I highly recommend that from a clean, uninfected system (that's not this system yet) you immediately change all the passwords on any systems you access from this system. If you do any on-line banking, or store any financial information on this system, you should immediately call your financial institution and advise them of the situation so you can secure your accounts.

Please Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click the Update tab.
  • Click Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install.
  • Click the Scanner tab.
  • Select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.

Download ComboFix© by sUBs from one of these locations:

http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospywa...Bs/ComboFix.exe

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Familiarize yourself with ComboFix before running it:
http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

  • Disable your AntiVirus and any AntiSpyware programs you may be running (usually via a right click on the System Tray icon) to prevent them from interfering.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. There are some difficult to remove infections that will only be fixed if you have the Recovery Console installed.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it will save a log.
Please include the contents of the log at C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE), JRE 6 Update 16".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, and check the "agree" box and click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java™ 6 Update 11
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

I ran the MBAM and Hijack this as you instructed, and the log files are below. I also installed ComboFix along with the Windows Recovery Console. When I ran it though, after stage 50 of the scan completed it said "deleting", and then soon after I got a blue screen of death and error message saying BAD_POOL_HEADER. I rebooted the machine and tried again, but got the same result. Finally, I did go ahead and update the Java Runtime Environment as you suggested.

Let's see if this solves the error you had.
  • Go to windows Device Manager (right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager button)
  • Click "view" and select "show hidden devices"
  • Scroll down to "Storage volumes"
  • Click on the plus to expand.
  • Right-click on each volume listed and select uninstall. (you will get a message on some saying to reboot before it takes effect. Select no until you do them all.)
  • Reboot.
  • Wait until windows automatically reinstalls devices. You will be prompted to reboot again.
  • Reboot.

Delete the copy of ComboFix.exe on the Desktop.
Download ComboFix© by sUBs from one of these locations:

It would not be on the desktop, it would be at C:\ComboFix.txt. That's the root of you C: drive.

Delete your current copy of ComboFix.
Download a new copy of ComboFix© by sUBs from one of these locations:

http://download.blee...Bs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospywa...Bs/ComboFix.exe

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and any AntiSpyware programs you may be running (usually via a right click on the System Tray icon) to prevent them from interfering.

  • Reboot to Safe Mode.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware. When finished, it will save a log.
Please include the contents of the log at C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Were you able to run ComboFix successfully and have it create a log this time?
If you were, please post the log along with a new HijackThis log.
