Hi there

I tried to system restore to yesterday and my windows XP said the restore was unsuccessful. I tried to go on my change/remove programs in the control panel but there was no way to remove anything. I have no idea what is happening being the first time it would not allow me to change anything. Here are my logs. Thanks for any help!

Hello,

Print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CPWJWDKQU] C:\WINDOWS\CPWJWDKQU.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pxxonnks] C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvbdnrm.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Delete these files in bold.

C:\WINDOWS\CPWJWDKQU.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cvbdnrm.exe

Restart the computer normally to reset the registry.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply. You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report.
Include a fresh HijackThis log for review.

Let me know what problem persist.

Nasdaq thanks so much for helping me out with this. Windows Defender was not in my programs menu and the icon in the folder wasn't readable. I was able to run hijack this and remove the three items. I was unable to locate the two files in bold to delete. I downloaded drweb and ran a quick scan with nothing found. When I attempted to get a report or touch any icon in the main screen the software shut down with an accompanying error message. That would be the first problem to persist (Drweb). Additionally my AVG software is 'unable to receive updates' and is grayed out in my toolbar. (problem #2). Finally, my computer seems sluggish. On the good side I am able to get to change/remove programs screen and make edits. THanks again for your assistance. Much appreciated. Please let me know how to proceed

The good news is that your log is clean.

I would suggest your remove AVG and keep McAfee for now.
Having both is not recommended. See Item 2 on this page.

Take a look at this page created by miekiemoes, one of the Global Moderators here, on slow systems, and some things you can try to do to try to improve it:

Sorry one more issue. My add/remove programs does not seem to be working as it used to. There are some programs that no longer allow you to remove them, they simply say how big the file is and how often it is used (rarely usually). In other words there is no longer the button to click on remove program. Any idea why this has changed?

Here is a list of programs that no longer all me to remove. Is it possible a virus may have deleted these? Some I have never heard of but others seem to be applications that came with the system. Thanks for the help.

Help and Support Customization

J2SE Run Time Environment 5.0 Update 4

Logitech Quickcam

MGI VideoWave 4 (I use this before would like to have back)

Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0

Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2002

Microsoft Office XP Professional

MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB925672) (never seen this before)

MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) (never seen this before)

MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK (never seen this before)

It seems as though some of these apps still load but I am not able to remove them through the add/remove screen any more.

Lets start with this one.

J2SE Run Time Environment 5.0 Update 4

To check your JAVA to see if it is the latest version, go here:
http://www.java.com/...d/installed.jsp

The most current version of Sun Java can be found and downloaded from here:
http://java.com/en/d...windows_xpi.jsp

Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software

Clean the Java Cache. Tutorial.

=*=

Those programs that you have deleted and still shown on the Add/Remove probram tab.

If you know what you are removing do it. Otherwise it's not broken do not fix it.

These are Microsoft updates. Not causing any problems. leave them alone.
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB925672) (never seen this before)
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) (never seen this before)
MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK (never seen this before)

MGI VideoWave 4 (I use this before would like to have back)

Thanks for the info. They all seem to be working correctly but cannot be removed through the add/remove programs screen. I can always bypass that screen if I ever need to remove them right? Thanks again.

If the programs have been deleted and name is still the list of in the Add/Remove programs it can be removed by modifying the registry.

If you are not confident in modifying the registry leave them alone.
