I was browsing around last night, and I suddenly got a huge number of pop-ups. Then WinAntiVirus (or something like that) started downloading and even installed itself. I went into Add/Remove programs and got rid of that particular program, but now all kinds of unwanted things are happening. When I do a Google search, I also get a separate window for ThinkAdz with related links. Also, when I click on some links, I get new windows opening up to sites that I didn't ask for.

So I got hit. Now I need to shut it down. Here's my log:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
Be wary of strong drink. It may make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss!

Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm out of town and away from my computer at the moment. But I will be back home later on today and will be able to perform the recommended actions. I'll post another log after I do that.

Again, thanks for your help, and sorry for the delay.

Finally back in front of my computer. So I ran the Smit Fraud Fix tool in safe mode. For what it's worth, it did not ask if I wanted to replace an infected wininet.dll file, but it did initiate the Windows disc clean-up tool. I wasn't expecting it to do that, and the disc clean-up tool never made very far. It seemed to get stuck while it was still scanning the disc, and I eventually ended the clean-up process when I rebooted the comuter. The Smit Fraud Fix tool didn't ask for or do the reboot, but I did it manually.

Right after that reboot, my computer decided that it was time to do a Windows update. So it downloaded the five different security updates which had been made available since the last time the updating program was used, including the June 2007 Malicous Software Removal tool. Then I had to reboot the computer yet again.

When the computer came back up in normal mode, my homepage had been reset to MSN. I also wasn't expecting that to happen, but it's no big deal.

Here is the log for the Smit Fraud Fix:

Greetings!

I followed your instructions. The first thing that I should mention is that HijackThis encountered an error when I tried to fix these things. It looks like some kind of error within HijackThis itself. I will be sending the email that the message told me to send, but I'll also paste the error message into here so that you can see what happened:

================== BEGIN QUOTE ==================

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: OCMAPIHK.DLL)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 7.0.5730.11
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

=================== END QUOTE ===================

After I got this error, I allowed HijackThis to continue it's repairs. Then I rebooted.

When I went to delete the indicated files after the reboot was complete, I could only find one of the three files mentioned.

I was able to delete "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyduaqul.dll".

I was not able to find or delete either "C:\WINDOWS\retadpu2000219.exe" or "C:\WINDOWS\system32\mwinrndt.exe", even though I made sure that I my folder options were set to show any hidden files.

Despite these little bubbles in the repair process, I don't seem to be having any further problems. Here is my new HijackThis log:
