I have been working on trying to remove this annoying fake alert message for a day or so now. Its meant to look like the windows security warning symbol, but when I click on it I get sent to the Spy Crusher website where they find some files but won't remove them unless I pay them first. The worst part is that I cannot get rid of the pop up message that appears once a minute saying that the system has detected a number of active spyware applications.....then it instructs me to click on the icon to get an up to date spyware removal program.

I have run Ad Aware in safe mode and spy-bot too.....I cannot access ewido for some reason nor can I get hijacker to run properly...I'm really screwed. Any suggestions?

...I did manage to run the Trend Micro house scan and boy did it find a bunch of bad stuff....but I still have the same problem and they listed a trojan as one malware that could not be automatically removed or cleaned. Its TROJ_RENOS.HX, possibly located in the windows directory (windows\system32\yesgnhr.dll)...is it a simple matter to find that directory and manually delete it? How do I do that without screwing up my operating system??

TIA

...I did manage to run the Trend Micro house scan and boy did it find a bunch of bad stuff....but I still have the same problem and they listed a trojan as one malware that could not be automatically removed or cleaned. Its TROJ_RENOS.HX, possibly located in the windows directory (windows\system32\yesgnhr.dll)...is it a simple matter to find that directory and manually delete it? How do I do that without screwing up my operating system??

TIA

Hi tatnic, and Welcome to SWI

Sorry it has taken so long to get to you, but the board has been very busy lately, and all the Helpers here are volunteers.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

I see you have Windows Defender installed, although it wasn't running when you ran your HijackThis log, you need to be certain it's not running.
Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

You also have NoAdware installed. While it's not a program I would recommend (it used to be on the list of rogue antispyware at http://www.spywarewa...e.htm#naw_note), please be certain it also isn't running. Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.

To disable Ad-Watch:

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
  • Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
  • Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off
3. Uncheck (red X) both items.

If you have the latest version of Ad-Aware that was just released, the instructions will likely not be correct to turn off Ad-Watch if you have enabled it.

You also appear to have Ad-Aware installed, although I didn't see it running in your log. Same thing, you need to be certain Ad-Watch isn't running.

I see you have (or had) Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered to be foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change though, please read this article:
http://www.clickz.co...cle.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present:
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Reboot afterwards. <-- Important!

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.

If you chose to uninstall Viewpoint, after rebooting, using Windows Explorer delete the following folders if still there:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\Bruce Crawford\Application Settings\Viewpoint
C:\Documents and Settings\SUSANP~1\Application Settings\Viewpoint <-- the folder SUSANP~1 will start with the letters SUSANP and be followed by some additional characters

Now you need to hide the files you un-hid earlier:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading unselect "Show hidden files and folders".
Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update".
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Do not automatically generate reports"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

After SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please open AVG Anti-Spyware. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode.)
Run a complete system scan with AVG Anti-Spyware.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware
Now you need to run HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only." Place a check next to the following entries (if still there):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
O3 - Toolbar: Protection Bar - {DF4E7A0C-E233-4906-B4C1-A404356541FF} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access\iesbpl.dll (file missing)
O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: hellenophile - {6f396a67-f473-48c9-9950-636ce17e584e} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\yesgnhr.dll

Now close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if still there):
C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access <-- folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yesgnhr.dll <-- file
C:\Program Files\SpyCrush 3.2 <-- folder

Then please restart your system into Normal Windows.

Please post a new HijackThis log, the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt, and the log from AVG Anti-Spyware.

Note : process.exe (used by SmitfraudFix) is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
