      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

Need help removing Virtumonde

21 posts in this topic

Help... My user's PC has become infected with Virtumonde and I can't seem to get rid of it. Spybot sees it and offers to remove it, but it can't because it's in memory. When it reboots, it tries to remove it at startup, but it's in memory already so it can't. I can't even boot into safe mode to remove it. Any ideas? Here's a HJT log file...

Note: The user's computer had at least one "Rogue" spyware application which I uninstalled. User also had OuterInfo installed, which I removed. I have cleaned off everything that comes up in SpyBot and AdAware 2007 except for Virtumonde, which is "uncleanable" due to being in memory.

Just wanted to add the above info as it may be relevant.

Print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

Do you know what these processes.

C:\hosttech\exe\DyePro.exe

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\agent.exe

The file properties should give you the information I'm looking for.

Please change the location of HijackThis.exe.

Create a new folder in your C: Drive

Name it C:\HJT or HijackThis and move the HijackThis.exe file in it.

It's best for this tool NOT TO be located in your Desktop or in a TEMP folder.

This way you can undo any changes if something goes wrong and will prevent the tool placing shortcuts on your Desktop.

Please download Atribune's VundoFix.exe from this site:

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 and place it on your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.

Click the Scan for Vundo button.

Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.

You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,

click YES

Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing

Vundo.

When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer,

click OK.

[*]Please set your system to show all files;

To delete the files/folders in the next steps, you may need to show hidden Files/Folders: How to.

At the end of the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want..

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:

ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: check.gif
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply. You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report.

Before you post the logs, update your Java. The current version is vulnerable to this type of infection.

Updating Java

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

[*]Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

[*]Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

[*]Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

[*]Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Let me know what problem persists.

Thanks, Nasdaq. I removed the only version of Java that was showing in the Add/Remove programs. I'll have to go over and take another look at the user's computer. Thanks again for your help!

The VundoFix reported that it was still active.

Possibly you removed it after the scan.

Glad we could help.

Oh... I took your statement that the log was clean to mean we had cleaned it completely. I have done nothing since. What do I need to do now?

I'm sorry... I don't understand. Is Virtumonde gone or is it still there? Should I use some sort of boot disk to go in and delete those two DLL files???

Maybe I ought to go over there and run another VundoFix scan to make sure.

Run the Vundo fix again. Let me see the results?

Are you having any issues that may indicate that the infection is still around?

None that I know of... just your comment that Vundo shows the infection is still there. I'll try to stop by the user's PC on my way home tonight and post a result of a scan no later than Monday.

Sorry about that.

I should have said that the vundo fix reported that Java version is 1.4.2.3 was found.

If it was removed then all is well in the West.

Well, I ran VundoFix again and it came back as nothing found... Looks like all is good! Thanks again for the help! :D
