Hi,

I've read the FAQ. I have Adadware SE, Spybot Search and Destroy, and AVG Anti-Spyware. Each time I scan in Safe Mode, the computer freezes in the process. So it seems futile to scan, as it freeze each time.

AVG Anti-Spyware did completed one scan and found this:

C:\Windows\7038531.dll
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{5BB6661-OA34-4642-A47A-FD0215E166FA}\RP3\A0007415.dll

The Hijack This log file is as follows:

Hello,

Print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {327C2873-E90D-4c37-AA9D-10AC9BABA46C} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://a1540.g.akama...meInstaller.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Restart the computer to reset the registry.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply. You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
=*=

Let see if this will reset your Safe Mode option.

; Save this text in bold as Fix.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\vds]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\vds]
@="Service"

; Double-click on Fix.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

Include a fresh HijackThis log for review.

Let me know what problem persists.

Hi Nasdaq,

I have successfully executed all your instructions, except the last instruction about "Save this text in bold as Fix.reg....." I copied your quoted text and pasted in Notepad, then saved it as Fix.reg on my desktop.
But the All Files type I chose did not have (*.*) at the end, is that ok?

I double clicked Fix.reg as you said, but nothing prompted to ask me to merge the information to the registry click? Have I done the whole think incorrectly? Could you explain more specifically how to do this last instruction for resetting the Safe Mode?

I should let you know that I have tried scanning anyway in Safe Mode using Adaware, and Spybot Search & Destroy. This time, each of them scanned successfully without freezing. It seems the virus may have been removed.

The DrWeb.cvs report is as follows:

WebColps.dll;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Logitech\WebColct;Adware.Altnet;Incurable.Moved.;
A0007452.dll;C:\System Volume Information\_restore{5BB66661-0A34-4642-A47A-FD0215E166FA}\RP3;Probably DLOADER.Trojan;Incurable.Moved.;

Your log is clean.

Before you do any purchase or baking activity let me see the results of this scan.

Download this file - combofix.exe

and save it to your desktop (Important). Also save the below command in Notepad as a text file so that you can copy/paste in safe mode.

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe"

Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key just before Windows starts to load.

go to start --> run and copy/paste in the following:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe"

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Save it and post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

In your next post, please include
  • new hijackthis log
  • combofix log
*use separate posts to ensure the logs don't get cut off!

I did experience computer freeze again two days ago. I rebooted by pressing the reset button each time. It did run a disc check. But freezes still. However, I tried pressing the power switch, then it ran a disc check, and the freeze stopped. It didn't happen again since.

Anyway, here is my combofix log. I tried posting it a few times and it failed. I hope this time will work.

That's the HijackThis log.

It's clean.

If you do not have any problems then we are done.
Otherwise, I want to see the results of the combofix, run it again if you have too.

I noticed that you have AVG and Norton one the computer.

Please review these instructions, pay attention to section 2.

Take a look at this page created by miekiemoes, one of the Global Moderators here, on slow systems, and some things you can try to do to try to improve it:
http://users.telenet...owcomputer.html

Let me know if you see any imporvements.

I had removed AVG anti-virus software, and kept Norton running.
I had defragmented my C drive and had rebooted, but saw little difference in speed improvement before and after.

I still need to find out which programs I should disable from Start-up, to see if that improve somewhat. The start-up is just a little slow, but not bothersome.

From your last reply, you didn't mention whether my Combofix log was clean or if it contains virus?
Is it save for doing on-line transactions based on my last combofix log?

Thanks.

I need to find out more abouthis file in bold.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\EOI朞酧鳅_鴳.exe

It may be part of the VSO' CD and DVD Burning Software you installed or used on 2007-06-05

If that is the case then the log is clean.

Can you make transactions, yes but I cannot be 100% sure but may be 99%. Cannot tell you to fix or remove if I can't see it.

Please read this Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

I do remember downloading some DVD burning software from a non-English source. But since I can't read that name file, for peach of mind, I decided to delete it.

Now that Combofix log shows it is clean and my computer no longer freezes, I guess my case is closed.

I will go to the site you referred me to and see what I can remove from start-up.

I want to thank you for your expertise and patience in helping me, and countless others you've helped.
I sincerely appreciate it, and it's a good feeling to know there are computer vigilantes like yourself in helping victims of viruses.

If I ever run into these kinds of problems - hopefully I won't again - I'll definitely visit this site again.

Thanks again, Nasdaq! Have a good summer.
