As with many others, I too have the about:blank hijack that keeps coming back.

- IE homepage goes to about:blank (title Search for..) search page.
- IE pop-ups when you surf known sites (e.g. mail.yahoo.com)
- notepad.exe was overwritten in /winnt, /winnt/system32 and /winnt/system32/dllcache
- 5 letter dll files in /winnt/system32 with current date and are not removable (in use).
- the directory date for /Program Files/Internet Explorer is 2 days ago when problems started happening. The directory /Program Files/Internet Explorer is only 11 MB, seems way to small for IE.
- Hijack this reports R0, R1 and BHO entries for the hijack, and a BHO for a 5 letter dll named above.

After cleaning the R1 and R0 entries, fixing notepad.exe and rebooting to remove the system32 5 letter dlls, the system appears clean and I can surf the web fine. Hijack this reports no new hijacks.

I have log files from filemon and regmon when the system was "clean" and I tried to get the hijacker to write a dll, but they do not show much.

But then today it came back.

Here is this hijack this log from when the hijack is in place.

bump... after booting, then cleaning with ad-aware, rebooting to finish the clean with ad-aware, manually removing the .dll files, then going to Microsft download and downloading & installing IE 6.1 SP1, rebooting to complete that install... it is clean... and appears clean after 24 hours... so far.

Download and install : "FINDnFIX.exe" from any of
the links in my signature.

Run the "!LOG!.bat" file, wait for the final output (log.txt)
post the results....

For now if you have trouble with notepad, open the log.txt with wordpad.
