Alright, this error message has been occuring for the last couple of days. I'm sure you guys are familiar with the effects of this error on internet connections when you click "Don't Send" or "Send Error Report" except mine has something else: After sending/not sending, all programs currently open freeze up and no other programs will start up. I've done some investigation on this and saw that in most of the cases is was the result of some backdoor trojan or other malware, and I suspect that the same has happened to me.

Anyways, I was able to get an HJT log while I still can.

Hi RicePigeon,

Welcome to SpywareInfo!

I apologize for the delay getting to your log. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately. If you are still having malware problems, I will be glad to help.

OK, letís do this first.

You have been infected with a generic IRCBot which is causing a buffer overflow and general instability on your system. Please do this next:
  • Go to Start -> Run and type (or copy and paste):

    services.msc

    Click "OK".

  • Double-click the service "Automatic Updates".
  • Click on the "Log On" tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.
  • Check if this service has been enabled on the listed "Hardware Profile" section. If not, please click the "Enable" button to enable it.
  • Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service.
  • Repeat the above steps with this other service: "Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)".

NEXT:

Re-register Windows Update components and clear the corrupted Windows Update temp folder:
  • Click on Start -> Run.
  • In the open field type (or copy and paste):

    REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL

    Press "Enter".

  • When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message, click "OK".
  • Please repeat these steps for each of the following commands, ONE AT A TIME:

    REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
    REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
    REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
    REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
    REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
    REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
    REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

NEXT:

After the above steps are finished and since the temporary folder of Windows Update may be corrupted, please do this next:
  • Click Start -> Run and type (or copy and paste):

    cmd

    Press "Enter".

  • Please run the following command in the opened window:

    net stop WuAuServ

  • Click Start -> Run and type (or copy and paste):

    %windir%

    Press "Enter".

  • In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
  • Click Start -> Run and type (or copy and paste):

    cmd

    Press "Enter".

  • Please run the following command in the opened window:

    net start WuAuServ

  • Please check if you receive any error when trying to re-register these components. If not, please try to visit the Windows Update site again.

    Windows Update case SRZ060207002222.

NEXT:

Please patch your Windows XP with the latest updates from Microsoft:
Windows Updates

Or open Internet Explorer, then go to the "Tools" menu -> "Windows Update", and follow the online instructions from there.

NEXT:

Please download and install a firewall. Some good and FREE versions are Comodo, Outpost, or ZoneAlarm.

Note: You must only use 1 (one) firewall at a time because if you have 2 or more firewalls running at the same time, they will conflict with each other and make your security less reliable. Please also remember to turn off Windows Firewall once you have installed a new firewall.

NEXT:

Please reboot your computer normally into Windows and then please post a new HijackThis log.

How are things running now? Please let me know about any problems that persist.

"Could not stop the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

Is the error message that pops up from process you described.

What gives an error when you try to open it?

Do you have Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 installed in your system? You can check this by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.

Let's do this next.

For this next step, please have your original Windows XP installation CD handy.

(If you donít have your original Windows XP installation CD, proceed with the scan anyway. If the scan prompts you to replace a corrupt OS file, direct it to the dllcache or i386 folder that should be present in your system. Thatís where Windows XP keeps its backup OS files. The location of these folders vary from system to system, so you would have to locate them first and remember their locations.):
  • Then, please go to Start -> Run and type (or copy and paste):

    sfc /scannow

  • Click "OK".
  • The System File Checker will now run. If it finds any corrupt OS files, it will prompt you to insert your Windows XP installation CD. If nothing is found, it will close by itself.
  • Please be patient as this scan may take awhile to complete.
Let me know things go.

Do you have your original Windows XP installation CD? It looks like we might have to do a repair reinstall of the system.

Could you borrow one? We don't need to do a full reinstall, so we can just borrow someone else's installation CD to do a repair reinstall.

Hmm, then we have quite a problem. It looks like we need to repair reinstall your OS, but we can't do that without a Windows XP installation CD. :(
