Popups and slow computer

Every few minutes I either get a pop-up in IE or a new tab advertisment in FF. If I close my explorer.exe in my Task Manager however, that seems to stop.

Also, my desktop sometimes locks up for a few minutes and I can still use things like Firefox or other programs but my desktop is locked and I can "paint" my windows on it. This also happens every once in a while.

I've went through 2 Adaware scans and a Spybot S&D scan, but the problems still occur.
