This is from the old SWI board, but the topic is locked along with the rest of the board.

http://www.spywarein...showtopic=47008

Here is the link to the location at Net-Integration

http://forums.net-in...t=0

cnm quoted this:

...There have been too many instances where folks are providing inaccurate or incomplete advice. There is a real possibility this could cause damage or unecessary grief therefore this policy is in effect immediately.

All replies made by persons not in above groups are subject to deletion without comment...

Then Budfred said

Interesting stance to take... I wonder if that might be needed here and on other boards... People used to learn by observing and trying things, but now that we have Boot Camp and other classes that isn't necessary and inexperienced people posting fixes can cause problems. I cringe when I think of some of the suggestions I made before I had some training....

There were a few more replies then Eagle1 said

Actually there is precedence for the position I took. And given the fact there is schooling to guide and encourage folks into learning it makes all the more sense.

It was getting out of hand. If it wasn't for a couple of alert advisors there could have been problems for a couple folks. It had to be brought under control. The potential adverse affects require it actually IMO.

Another post, then I said

Paul Wilders has done something similar. Wilder's no longer allows guest posting in the hijack forum. Not only that, they have some tweak that prohibits even registered users from posting in other peoples topics. You can only post in the topic you created. Obviously, board staff can post in any topic. They still allow guest posting in all other areas of the board.

Anyways, I thought this was interesting, so I brought it over to the new board here.

Yes, it is interesting and I think it'll prove to be a positive change, too. It should keep things more organized and easier to manage.

wawadave,

I am reading your post as sarcasm, if that is not the intent my comments do not apply.

This is not about totalitarianism or any other dictatorship... This is about the trust that people place in these forums to provide help. When you come here and post about a problem, you do so with the expectation that the people responding know what they are talking about. Unless you take the time to learn out it actually works, you don't know the difference between someone listed as an Expert from someone listed as an Advanced Member... Would you go to the doctors office and expect anyone who happens to wander in to diagnose and treat your problem?? With leaving it open for anyone to post in any thread, that is what we do with people's computers. The malware makers can actually come here and post destructive advice which we might not catch until it is too late...

If you believe expecting some credentials is somehow limiting, I suggest getting your next medical checkup from someone waiting at the bus station, most people could use a few bucks and they would probably charge a lot less than an actual MD....

I wasn't referring to LOL, I was referring to comments about iron fists and totalitarianism... And your comments about a pound of flesh can be added to that now... Saying LOL does not make aggressive comments benign....

If you have a better way of protecting users from bad advice, I suggest that you propose it since I am sure that the people who run the forums would like a safe and effective way that didn't involve having to monitor things so closely...

Actually, I'm curious as to why you think setting up some controls and posting restrictions is going to make things "get out of hand" or why rules themselves are signs of an iron fist mentality.

I mean, what was out of hand on a lot of these sites, and many now have the same policies and restrictions, was the posting of bad advice, or the posting of unrelated logs in other people's threads. These changes should help both the people seeking assitance and the helpers who can now expect a little more organization when working hard in people's logs.

The spelling cop brigade could be seen as sacrasm and serves to contradict the rest.

But then judging by some crazy folks running around, there's a good possbility it might not. <<---- damn, we lost ye smiley :(
