My computer here is acting up with all sorts of problems, like uncontrolable popups, and various computer freezing. A friend told me to use hijack this and said that hopefully someone can help me get my computer back on track.

Thanks

Hi there mlkbon,

Printing this may help you

As you have a variety of issues, I suggest you proceed as follows:

Download the latest version of CWShredder Here by Merijn Bellekom, the creator of Hijack This. Check for updates!!
Run it, press 'Fix', and allow it to fix all it finds.

Next;

Download Spybot - Search & Destroy Here

After installing, you MUST first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot clean all the items marked in red.

Next;

Now download Ad-Aware Here
After installing AAW, and before running the program, you NEED to FIRST update the reference file following these instructions. Here

Now do the following:

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"

- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

If it finds "bad" files and registry keys, press "Next" again
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

When you've done all that, re-run Hijack This, and show me a fresh log.

There may be more to do!

Hi,

You are running hijackthis from your desktop, this is not a good idea because when we do a fix hijackthis will create backups and they will be spread all over your desktop. Can you please create a folder in My Documents and call it Hijack (or something similar). Then extract hijackthis into the folder you have created and run it from there. When you have done that, delete the copy of hijackthis that you have on your desktop.

When you have done that, then make sure all browsers and windows are closed except for hijackthis and put a check against the following and click 'fix checked';

NOTE THE OPTIONAL FIX

Next,

Restart your computer in

Hi mlkbon,

I can see no other problems with your log, is everything running ok?

If so please do this to help keep your system clean,

To provide future protection - download and install:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. Download from Here

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. Download
Here
Both are very small free programs that you run once, and then just weekly to check for updates.

And also see
So how did I get infected in the first place?

I did what both of you said, there are no real problems, but here is what I did. I updated the computer to XP professional, and added Nortons 2004 and Nortons Internet security. Nortons 04 is good, but internet security is not booting up, I uninstalled/installed it a couple times and the same problem, it also takes a good 5 minutes to boot up the computer. I now canot uninstall Internet security, it is asking for the supervisor permission or administrator, which I am. Do you know how to solve this boot up problem? Here is the latest log too.

Thanks

Brad, if you uninstall norton, norton internet security, get rid of all that, then run that registry cleaner i had you d/l. Let it fix whatever. Norton adds so much to the registry its not even funny. Then reinstall it. Also bootup slowdown is probably from programs that are loading at bootup. You can go to www.blackviper.com and check that out. Its the best site I know of that can help speed up your comp from getting rid of unneeded services. Then go to msconfig just type in msconfig in the run thing on the start menu. Go to programs tab. A lot of what is listed you are going to need for your computer to run right. If you go to google and search for the entry it most of the time will have a result for what it is and you can decide if you want it loading at bootup or not. Be careful you dont turn of sytem programs though.

I removed all the nortons, but now I need a anti virus and something similar to an internet security. Can you suggest any good programs to use? And since I did remove nortons, the computer load has gotten a lot faster.

Thanks
