smckillop, My system resources are down to 28%. Would it help for me to post a HJT log so someone could tell me what programs are running unnecessarily. I don't have any problems with my 'puter at this time. But a separate issue is that I tried to run scan disk in safe mode with the screensaver off but it ran VERY slowly. . .like, increasing just a few numbers in almost a minute. I have win98SE with a dialup connection. I haven't ran scandisk in awhile but it used to function normally.
If it is improper etiquette for me to post on someone else's post I apologize. I just wanted to ask you, specifically, about this. Thanks.

Romans10, Hi. :)

Yes, please post your HijackThis log into this post. If you have a spy/adware problem it will get moved to the appropriate forum.

As soon as someone can assist you, they will, please try to be patient if you don't get a reply straightaway, as the board cann be very busy.

As for the Scandisk problem, you could first try disk cleanup as you may be low on disk space which can affect performance.

Hope this helps.

Here is my HJT log. I just want to clean up my computer. I had 46 programs unchecked in the startup menu. I've tried to get rid of some of these programs (Kazaa, FocusFocus, SaveNow, etc) but haven't been successful. I've even tried a software removal utility but it didn't get some of these. What should I get rid of? Since I re-opened all of these additional programs my system resources went from 28% to 4%. Hope I have enough to send this HJT log.

First, I strongly recommend uninstalling KaZaa. If you retain it, reinfestation is inevitable.
Then please download AdAware from http://www.lavasoft.de/

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

Make sure the following settings are made and on (ON=GREEN)

From main window click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning", "Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

To save your settings click "proceed".

Now click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

reboot again, and let Adaware run if it asks.

Then, please download SPYBOT. Unzip the program, run it and click on search for updates. Install all updates, then hit scan.

Let it fix everything marked in RED.

Then post a fresh Hijack this log.
Be wary of strong drink. It may make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss!
