I have Ad-Aware, Spybot, and CWS. But it won't go away. From the website: The CoolWebSearch Chronicles I think that I have a combination of Variant 38: CWS.Searchx and Variant 39: CWS.Realyellowpage. It puts a file called sp.html in my temp folder and tries to redirect my homepage to it. It puts a random named DLL in my winnt/system32 folder and a file is created called aee81ebc.tmp which is 16kb in size. When I look into that file I see nothing but oriental characters, that is it might be Japanese, Chinese, or even Korean. CWS (which only identifies it as Variant 38: CWS.Searchx) and Ad-Aware will get rid of it temporarily but it comes back at random times. Now the above website says that it may be a combo of both, but the second doesn't show in hijack this (though i have appended a hijack this log to the end of this file for completeness). The website says to do the following:

Download PrcView here: http://www.spywarein...jn/files/pv.zip, unzip it to the desktop.

Be sure to have at least 1 Internet Explorer window open, then double click on the runme.bat.

Select option '2' from the menu.

Notepad will open with a log in it. Look for a line with this file, size and beginning to it.
The filename will always be different:
winajbm.dll 61c00000 61440 c:\windows\system32\winajbm.dll

This part indicates the bad file:
61c00000 61440
It will always start with that header.

Write down the filename behind it.

Now download KillBox:
http://download.broa...uff/KillBox.zip

Unzip and run it.

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot".

On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The file you copied earlier should now show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

After rebooting, make sure the file is gone.

After running PV I find this file:

WININET.dll 63000000 614400 C:\WINNT\system32\WININET.dll 6.00.2800.1405 Internet Extensions for Win32

Is this file the one I'm supposed to delete? It has the same byte size except with a 0 added to the end. I haven't gone any further because I don't want to mess things up.

I had to disable my firewall before this thing would work. This resbann.dll, I have ran into it before. The virus scanner at www.grisoft.com tagged it as a trojan/problem but said it couldn't fix it. I looked into the winnt/system32 folder and can't find it (and yes I have view hidden files and folders enabled).

Well done!
Your bad file is positively identified on all counts!
This will take couple or more steps to fix.
Be sure to Follow the next set of steps carefully, in
the exact order specified:

-Open the FINDnFIX\Keys1 Subfolder!
- Locate the "MOVEit.bat" file,Right-Click on it,select->edit:
The file will open as text file.
-Copy and paste the entire hilited line in the following quote box
(all one line) into the 'MOVEit' file, replacing it's contents:

move %WinDir%\System32\RESBANN.DLL %SystemDrive%\junkxxx\RESBANN.DLL

Be sure to Replace the text in the file with the command above!

-Save the file and close.

*Get ready to restart your computer:
-In the same folder, DoubleClick on the "FIX.bat" file.
You will be prompted by popup -Alert to restart in 15 seconds.
-Allow it to restart the computer!

-On restart, Navigate to:
C:\FINDnFIX\ main folder:
-DoubleClick on the "RESTORE.bat" file.

It'll run and produce new log. (log1.txt) post it here!
===========================================
*Note:
Some *crippled version(s) of XP would not let you edit .bat files!

In case of any errors while attempting to edit the MOVEit file, or
no 'edit' function, etc., skip the other steps and
use these alternate steps, instead:

------------------------------------------------------------
*Get ready to restart:
- DoubleClick on the "FIX.bat" file in the 'FINDnFIX' folder.
-Wait for the popup -Alert to restart your computer in 15 seconds.

On restart, navigate to System32 folder:
-Locate and select the "RESBANN.DLL" file (as it will be visible)
And use the folder's top menu>edit>
move to folder...
Select the C:\junkxxx as destination and move
the 'RESBANN.DLL' there.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Run the "RESTORE.bat", file , wait for
and post the 'log1.txt' file!

If the first set of steps (MOVEit/edit/paste/save, etc) was successful, there is no need to follow the alternate steps above!

OK, I had to use the second method, I think something is wrong with my notepad file, I checked them out as you have stated in other threads and they both say microsoft in properties. But there is a notepad.exe.bak and it says microsoft in properties.

Back to the topic at hand...

Great progress! :thumbsup:

Last step(s):

-Open the FINDnFIX\Files2< Subfolder:
Run the -> "ZIPZAP.bat" file.
It will quickly clean the rest and
will make a copy of the bad file(s) in the same
folder (junkxxx.zip) and open your email client with instructions:
Simply drag and drop the 'junkxxx.zip' file from
the folder into the mail message and submit
to the specified addresses! Thanks!

When done, restart your computer and
Delete and entire 'FINDnFIX' file+folder(s)
From C:\, and be sure the C:\junkxxx folder
was deleted (as part of the cleanup process)

As for the remains, run any and all
removal tools once again as they should work properly now!
In particular,
CWShredder.exe and fully updated Ad-Aware!

Feel free to post follow up hijackthis log when done! ;)

Seems to have worked, my hijack this log follows. However I have a question. I ran Ad-Aware after this and it had a problem with an addetect program I found on the net. SCAM.Enigma.NoAdware is what it said. the program is NoAdware. Is this a problem?

I ran Ad-Aware after this and it had a problem
with an addetect program I found on the net. SCAM.Enigma.NoAdware
is what it said. the program is NoAdware. Is this a problem?

Try downloading hijackthis again and fixing the same lines.
Most are still there.

Looks like hijackthis doesn't work properly on your system, for some reason :scratchhead:

Alternatively-
For the 016- items, open IE options/settings/view objects,
and manually remove the corresponding entries (if exist)

As for the -02-/no file
go to: start/run/regedit
Expand:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

Find, RightClick and delete these 3 subfolders:
{4C2D739A-E4C0-4ABC-BF09-948AB8FCA3D5}
{7B556B08-D896-4C4B-B44E-D15E6DF5853B}
{D9987934-5307-46A2-8E65-ADF37EDC8C09}

And you should be all set ;)

OK I did all you said. First that downloaded program file place (accessed through Internet Explorer) has only 13 items. hijackthis has more. Those BHO's keep coming back.

As for the -02-/no file
go to: start/run/regedit
Expand:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

Find, RightClick and delete these 3 subfolders:

{4C2D739A-E4C0-4ABC-BF09-948AB8FCA3D5}
{7B556B08-D896-4C4B-B44E-D15E6DF5853B}
{D9987934-5307-46A2-8E65-ADF37EDC8C09}

And you should be all set ;)

These are orphaned files! (no files)
If you deleted them in regedit directly, and they are no longer in regedit, then the bug is in hijackthis. :p

It could be thats it's reading the backups and not the loaded files.
You can confirm in in regedit, in the 'Browser helpers objects' key, as indicated above!

Do that, and reopen regedit, They should no longer be there!
Ignore what hijackthis is showing (f/p, most likely).

As for these:
O16 - DPF: {00000075-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71} -
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111157} -

Use regedit find/find next function and enter the CLSid to the search, and delete references found:
1.)
{00000075-0000-0010-8000-00AA00389B71}
2.)
{11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111157}

OK the BHOs are no longer in regedit, though Hijackthis says they are.

As for the O16s, I can't find them anywhere in regedit.
