My daughter's laptop is experiencing the about:blank malware problem. It also was infected by 2 or 3 viruses, several different trojan horses, etc. I have run McAfee virus scan several times, but the StartPage-AX trojan and StartPage EB!hosts trojan keeps coming back up as having been deleted by McAfee, even though McAfee's window continuouly appears on the screen saying McAfee is deleting them.

Also, I have tried to delete
"http://aifindinfo/" from various places in the registry according to Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article- 320195, but these files returned to the registry. The McAfee scan showed that some of the restore files were infected.

I have tried running Ad-aware, then McAfee, MicroTrend Housescall, Nortons's free scan, McAfee again and again, installed Windows Service Pack 1, then Spybot Search and Destroy, and finally HijackThis.

When I ran SpyBot, I got several problems and hijacks that needed to be fixed, and I also received an error, that said:

"Anal-Oral.WinMain [Datei C:\WINDOWS/System32/drivers/etc/hosts/
kann nicht geoffnet werden.
Access is denied"

When I ran HijackThis, I received the following error:

"An unexpected error has occurred at procedure:modMain_CheckOther1 Item()
Error #75-Path/File access error

"Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:

*What you were doing when the occurred
* How you can reproduce the error

Windows version: Windows NT 5.0.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2800.1106
HijackThis version: 1.97.7"

"This message has been copied to yoiur clipboard."

Note; I had to do a screen shot of the above error message and then retype it here since it did not go to the clipboard, or maybe I did something wrong.

Below please find my HijackThis log. Please advise me as to whether or not I should just forget trying to fix all the about:blank and virus problems with the laptop and just reformat the hard drive and reload everything. I have never reformated and reloaded windows, but at this point, with all the time I have spent trying to fix it (to no avail), I am wondering if reformatting and reloading is a better and shorter solution in the long run.

Thank You for your help,

I thought I would post again since I did not receive any replys to my June 28 post about the about:blank problem as well as other problems on my daughters laptop.
