      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.

Does Win 98 need special defenses?

4 posts in this topic

Last night I ran adawre on a 98SE machine here at work and removed over 400 objects. This morning I ran it again and removed over 200 objects. Spybot S&D and CWShredder both found nothing wrong. I then ran HJT, and here is the log file. After I get the computer to where it should be, I'll download any updates that I can from MS, but at this point the machine is too bogged down to anything like that, but other than that what else should be done to protect a 98 machine? I do have Spyware Blaster installed on the machine now.

Here is its HJT log:

You have the Peper trojan, which requires special treatment to put it out of your misery!

Please download and run this uninstaller.

Click on the peperfix link, and download the program. Then go off line, and run the program. It will remove the files, leaving one orphaned entry to be cleaned up with Hijack this.

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

There seems to be no antivirus program on that computer. That should be the first line of defence, so it is strongly recommended that you install one ASAP. AVG free edition, from Grisoft is effective, regularly updated, and much lighter on resources than many others. This can be important on Win 98.

Please post a followup Hijack this log, and say if your problems persist.

First off, thanks for the help. It is really appreciated.

Second, Funny thing about the lack of anti-virus software- Norton was installed on the machine, but funny how nobody mentioned that it wasn't working properly. It couldn't find its definitions at bootup. I'll be adding the software that you recommended.

Third, this is about the 3rd time that a machine here has been hit by peper and it turns out that I had the fix downloaded already. What was in the HJT log that said to you, this machine has the peper virus?

Fourth, here is the new HJT log. It looks like a few things are there that should be removed. Also, FTR only one of the files you said to delete were on the machine, they weren't hidden (I always unhide files) can I assume that HJT got them?

this one was the peper entry.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [3AG5CB543YWTL2] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Kvw1.exe

A 14 digit process name, and a "letter soup" filename. There are also two random named processes in the running processes section of the log.

If the files cannot be found, then it's safe to assume tha hijack this removed them.

Only one thing in your log to fix.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FSD] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FSD.exe

Reboot and delete the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FSD.exe
