      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.

Browser hijacker

4 posts in this topic

I would sincerely appreciate any help offered. I am just learning about this stuff.

I ran Spybotsd and then cwshredder. I thought that the cwshredder rid me of the Cool Web Porn crap and other unwanteds but it just like morphed into gross new porn pages in my favorites.

The cwshredder did get rid of the annoying "searchpage" that popped up in my browser every so often.

I am running microsoft XP home edition.

I am not well versed in this stuff as you can probably tell, so I would sincerely appreciate any help offered. Below is my Log File from HJT but I don't have a clue in what to delete and so forth.

Thanks for the help in advance.

First, move hijackthis.exe into its own folder (just create a folder somewhere and drag it there).

Next, click on "Start," then "Run." Type in "msconfig" and click OK. Once msconfig runs (be patient), click on the "Startup" tab and look for "WToolsA.exe." Uncheck the box beside it and close the window. It will ask to restart; do so.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. To do this, press the F8 key repeatedly as the computer starts up until you see a menu screen (if Windows starts normally, restart it again). Use the arrow keys to highlight "Safe Mode" and press Enter. If it asks to use System Restore, say no.

With Internet Explorer closed, run Hijackthis again, and scan the computer. Put a check mark by the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = c:\searchpage.html

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\searchpage.html

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = c:\searchpage.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [5ygd9jlrtt] C:\WINDOWS\nt9txyh60v.exe

Click on "Fixed Checked" and delete the items.

Next, search for the following and, if they exist, delete:

searchpage.html

The entire "C:\Program files\Common Files\WinTools\" folder.

redirect5.exe

nt9txyh60v.exe

zhelp.exe

Restart the computer normally. Run hijackthis again and post the log here.

Reality Chuck,

I followed your stellar directions and can already see a big change in how fast my computer moves. It's like brand new again!!!

Here is what I did:

- followed your directions to the letter but while in safe mode, I didn't see the following in the HJT scan:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = c:\searchpage.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = c:\searchpage.html

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\searchpage.html

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = c:\searchpage.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [5ygd9jlrtt] C:\WINDOWS\nt9txyh60v.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [zhelp] C:\WINDOWS\zhelp.exe

Then I ran a search and deleted the following:

searchpage.html

redirect5.exe

nt9txyh60v.exe

zhelp.exe

I restarted the computer in normal mode and ran HJT again. Looking at the new log file, I saw all of the files that I didn't see in the safe mode HJT log file so I deleted them.

Here is the resultant HJT log file:

Sorry to be a pest, but I found something else. I reread my reply and spotted this:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [zhelp] C:\WINDOWS\zhelp.exe

So I ran HJT and deleted again.

Here is the HJT Log:

Last Thing I swear. When I restart my computer I get the Following System Configuration Utility pop-up on my desktop. It says:

You have used the System Config. Utility to make changes to the way

Windows starts

The Sys. Config. Util. is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode.

Choose the normal startup mode on the general tab to start windows

normally and undo the changes you made using the Sys Config Utilily

What should I do next?
