      IE 11 copy/paste problem

      It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

      PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

      We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.   EDIT: I have asked our hosting service to do the restore at 9 PM Central time and it looks like it will go forward at that time.  Please prepare whatever you need to prepare so that we can restore your topics when the forum is stable again.

Am a computer professional (Java programmer) trying to fix malware infection, have fixed infections before with and without help.

Symptoms:

windows popping up with title: contextual platform worldadmarketplace

various sites, no address bar, windows often present with close X just off screen.

Some things were blocked by Registry Mechanic (wife installed), but didn't catch names, will pay closer attention and edit with new information if anything else gets blocked. Wife also installed PC Tools Spyware Doctor. Both Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor are currently running.

Thanks for your time in helping with this!

~Rhys

EDIT:

Reviewed HJT log and noticed two things:

  1. O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [GetModule36] C:\Program Files\GetModule\GetModule36.exe -> this was at least one of what was blocked by Registry Mechanic
  2. C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe -> As I use Firefox, I don't believe I'm currently running IE...

Hi,

Your system is severly infected. Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show.

Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution.

So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start. Reason I am telling this is because when a system is so terribly infected and we try to clean this up manually, the damage that is already present may interfere with our removal attempts.

Both Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor are currently running
And both are no Antivirus.

You are actually missing the most important program here, and that is an Antivirus. No wonder this computer is so severly infected. I even see malware related leftovers present here from more than 2 years ago.

Anyway, * Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/

Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding.

Then reboot.

After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".

There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new Hijackthislog.

Then we'll start from there and deal with the rest.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I wanted to wait to reply until I had done what you had said.

Sorry for the late reply, have been attempting to follow your instructions but ran into a rather large snag. Downloaded and installed personal version of Avira as directed, and system was immediately bogged down by the auto-guard feature finding and attempting to delete the same 4 DLLs attributed to two pieces of malware called TR/Vundo.Gen and TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen. After I spent 151 minutes swatting popups I noticed that they were the same 4 entries and that the popups were going to keep on coming. Then, I marked them all as delete and was able to, with some effort, reboot. Upon reboot, the Avira guard thing came up, again, monopolized the processor so the computer was unable to completely come up, then deadlocked itself with its popups. So... the computer's been frozen since shortly after I received your reply yesterday and I gave up after a few hours.

Luckily, at least in this respect, I was laid off today, so am able to spend time to get the issue resolved. So... was able to reboot, kill Avira, restart it, disable the auto-guard feature, and - as you said - do a full scan. So... it's scanning right now. In addition to the other two malware I mentioned, it's found TR/Dldr.Agent.aldb, possibly among other things, as well (it said 6 total, but it's only scanned 2% over 10 minutes).

Will check back periodically to see whether the scan has completed and continue to follow instructions.

~Rhys

EDIT:

Finished scan. It wasn't the scan that was having the problems, it was the auto-protect feature. I disabled it and let the scan run while I slept and 11 hours later it finished.

Here is the log before I shut down:

Hi,

If the scan is having problems with deleting some files... don't worry for now. We'll get rid of it. Important thing is that you're having an Antivirus present now, because it would be a pity that we clean this up and you'll get infected afterwards again, because no Antivirus was present to prevent malware.

Anyway, do next please...

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Edited previous post to include logs that resulted from Avira scan when it finally finished and the HJT scan afterward.

Was nervous of running ComboFix because last time I had a computer with vundo and used it the computer ended up nuked. As I recall, I think what happened was I overthought it and assumed the computer would need to be restarted in safe mode so thing would be able to be deleted. So even though I did let combofix restart the computer I had already set the safe mode flag. Afterwards, I was caught in a boot to safe mode loop I couldn't get out of. From that point it was a downward spiral.

Because of that nervousness, it took longer to run it. Sorry for the wait.

The log you requested follows.

Hi,

We still have a lot to clean. :(

Keep in mind to change all your passwords afterwards, because your passwords may be known as well.

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.

Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::

c:\windows\system32\579e2fc2-ca1d-3753-a062-dc90c56795c8.exe

c:\windows\system32\nsk3C.dll

c:\windows\system32\rn.tmp

c:\windows\system32\cont_worldadmarketplace-remove.exe

c:\windows\system32\ljmuuluyiaianx.exe

c:\documents and settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Folder::

c:\windows\mrkq

c:\program files\Common Files\mrkq

c:\documents and settings\Owner\Application Data\Twain

c:\program files\WebShow

c:\documents and settings\Owner\Application Data\cogad

Driver::

Sptdiswomiti

DDS::

uSearchMigratedDefaultURL = hxxp://internetsearchservice.com/search?q={searchTerms}

uDefault_Search_URL = hxxp://internetsearchservice.com

mSearchMigratedDefaultURL = hxxp://internetsearchservice.com/search?q={searchTerms}

mSearchURL = hxxp://internetsearchservice.com

Registry::

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{2520a4cf-d431-5bb1-aaf8-84d4e45dc9ef}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]

"AppInit_DLLs"=""

[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]

"EnableFirewall"=dword:00000001

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Did that; when the computer came up, again, the AV said it found something, so I deleted it.

Hi,

This looks OK again.

Scan again with HijackThis and look if the following entries are still present (because it appears that Combofix didn't deal with one (or more) related):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://internetsearchservice.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://internetsearchservice.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://internetsearchservice.com

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://internetsearchservice.com

If they are still present, fix them in HijackThis.

Then, Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • For Platform, select "Windows"
  • For language, select your language
  • Read the License agreement and then Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • Java 6 Update 5

    [*]Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

    [*]Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

    [*]Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

    [*]Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Yes, my apologies for the wait. I've had to spend a lot of time lately on retraining in order to try to find another job.

Still getting admarketplace windows after last post. Have not yet uninstalled combofix per your last post. Will do your last set of instructions soonest, or do whatever new instructions you have when I'm able to.

Thank you for your patience.

Hi,

Strange you're still getting the popups though.

Can you run Combofix once again and post the log please? Also, post a new HijackThislog.

I think I completed your last instructions. I couldn't find Java to uninstall. Perhaps I removed it previously. I did find C/Program Files/Java/{previous version} so just to be safe deleted it before installing the version you mentioned.

Logs follow.

Hi,

Looks like you got reinfected in a meanwhile, but combofix already removed it now.

How are things now?

Have been sick, so haven't had a chance to go through and put the computer through its paces. Should post within a day or two after using whether it's still got symptoms or seems to be asymptomatic.

In the meantime, I'll eun an Antivir scan and post the log, just in case. That should take about a day...

Regardless, thanks very much for your help.

Ok, I read you later.

Before running the Avira scan, do next please..

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

I had already begun the scan, and was about halfway through before I read your post. The scan had found about five different items. I wasn't sure if uninstalling combofix would do anything with the scan, so I did so. Unfortunately, it stopped the scan. So, after it was done uninstalling, I started another scan. It just finished. Now, it seems to have found nothing.

Log follows.

Hi,

This looks OK again.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again! :)

Thank you very much for the help, and especially for your patience. Now to hunt for work...

Wanted to find out more about my helper, so I read your profile. From there, I read your blog. I say this so this comment does not seem out of place: good luck on quitting smoking; I hope it's going well and that saying something about it doesn't jinx it. Someone who spends their time helping helpless schmucks like myself who really should know better deserves all the best in life.
