Firstly, it seems that the original spirit of the Internet is alive and well in this Forum. Many Thanks!!! for all who lend a hand. Since my daughter went to college this year my experience with all thiings malicious has grown. Normally a good through cleaning with Ad-aware & Spybot do the trick, however this time she has come down with something nasty. Upon boot-up, Spybot reports that Advertising.com wants to download, after answering no several times we're sent out to all kind of places in the land of Oz. Ran Ad-aware, Spybot & CWshredder in safe mode with system restore off and still can't get rid of it. I'm posting my hijackthis.log would sincereley appreciate any help in getting us back home to Wichita. Many Thanks!!!

Disregard this advice, please. cnm
Close all your windows and kill then the following processes:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe

If you can't kill these processes, then you must start windows in safe mode and delete the files manual.

Check the following items and click then on Fix Checked:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
O2 - BHO: MyWay Search Assistant BHO - {04079851-5845-4dea-848C-3ECD647AA554} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\SrchAstt\1.bin\MYSRCHAS.DLL

Scan your computer in safe mode with Adaware, Spybot and with a full updated version of Kasperksy to remove spyware/virusses.

Please post your log here again.

Baris posted in my thread as well. I may be a bit paranoid in doing this, but I feel I should mention that Baris is not even a helper trainee and seems to be giving out advice to delete what seem to be be benign programs.

Here is a link to the helper groups thread thing. I think Baris is just trolling.

As it says, it may be in your best interest to be skeptical of the advice he gives. It may be potentially damaging.

Thanks!!! And yes I noticed he has just joined with only (6) posts, that in itself made me skeptical. I will wait for more to answer.

Just to update all, problem solved. It seems that these *legitimate* looking windows files were left over from a virus that Norton cleaned out, but left these entries in the Registry. Once deleted, no more "Advertising.com redirects"
That only cost me (4) hours.

Looks like you're clean :)

I recommend downloading the following programs:

SpywareBlaster

IE-Spyad

MVPS Hosts

These will prevent much of the bad stuff from getting on your computer. They're all free.

For IE-Spyad and MVPS Hosts, check either at their respective web sites or the Software Update forum here for update announcements.

Here's some recommended changes in IE settings that will help protect you:

Go to the Tools menu, then choose Internet Options.

Click on the Privacy tab and click on the Advanced button.

In the box that pops up, check both the Override automatic cookie handling and Always allow session cookies boxes. Set First party cookies to "Allow" and Third party cookies to "Block". Click OK

Go to the Security tab & click the Custom Level button.

The following ActiveX section settings should be changed as follows:
  • Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt
  • Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Prompt
