I do not know if this is of any relevance but I will mention it anyway just in case.

In my AVG virus vault I found the following information from back in March:
"Infection";"Trojan horse PSW.Generic6.AGMY";"E:\Autorun.exe";"";"3/23/2009, 12:38:01 PM"
"Infection";"Virus identified Worm/Generic.IPV";"E:\udbcconf.dll";"";"3/23/2009, 12:38:00 PM"

The interesting thing is that the antivirus software found virus on the flash card I use to carry data around.
I used to go to a copy center to have some scans and some prints made and I have read that certain viruses primarily spread themselves through flash cards.
The other way I reckon I could have stumbled upon this virus problem is by using bit torrent which I have also read could be highly contagious since it basically opens the front door to the computer inviting anyone inside. However, I have stopped using it since I read this so if continued use is a requirement for the virus to continue operation I guess it is not an issue.

From yesterday there was a new virus detected which has not appeared neither sooner or later. I do not know if that is of any importance.
"Infection";"Virus identified Worm/Autoit.ZPA";"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Dokumenter\fnxspn.exe";"";"7/13/2009, 7:57:16 PM"

Run this flash disinfector too.

1 - Flash Drive Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from >here< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

As for your add-ons.
Create a temporary folder on your desktop.

Move the file into the temporary folder.

Restart.

Move them one at a time to the original folder.

P.s. If I'm asking more than one question use the same reply to give me the information.
I do not wish to miss any of your posts.

OK. The flash drive cleaner did not find anything so I guess AVG removed what ever there was already.

If I look in the Mozilla folder under plugins I do find some files but they do not seem to correspond to the plugins on the list under tools.

Where does mozilla firefox place the plugins ? and do I have to do this for extentions also or just plugins ?

thank you.

Try this location.

C:\Documents and Settings\<Windows login/user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Plugins\" folder.

Move plugins to another location - Firefox

out of 6 different user profiles only one contained the folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\M\Application Data\Mozilla\plugins

but it only contained 1 single plugin for google talk.
so I wonder where the rest of the plugins might be stored?

thanks.

  • Run this registry script, which forces Windows to show so called "superhidden" files:
  • Copy the contents of the Quote box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as Unhide.reg (make sure to save as type: "All Files")
  • Doubleclick Unhide.reg, and answer 'yes' when prompted to add its contents to the Registry.
  • Restart your computer.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\SuperHidden]
"DefaultValue"=dword:00000001

Search the registry for any strings that you can thing of. (folders name and files in the Porn connection folder)

Do not worry if you do not find anything.

In the mean while I have sent an APB (All point bulletin) to the other experts in this Forum for suggestions.

Stay with me.

I took the ThreatExpert report as point of departure for my choice of keywords to search for:
http://www.threatexp...01dbd432182bc88

I did not find anything on:
icondrv

I did find something on:
lsass
userinit

c:\windows\system32 26kb Program 4/14-2008

c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 26kb Program 4/14-2008

I thought it would not be worth it to search for anything related to the porn collection itself since it is rather the effect but not the cause of the problem.

thank you.

These should be good.

I'm still waiting for some feedback on my APB.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
    This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

p.s. Make sure all your Flash cards are inserted when you execute the scan.

Goto Prevx site and click the Remove this infection button.
http://www.prevx.com...CONDRV.EXE.html
===

Keep me posted.

Thank you.

The folder where this blonde stravaganza always turned up was a folder shared on local network (though I am not on any local network currently).
I tried to turn this off and since then I have not seen it. That was Wed. night.

The second virus being detected was in the system reg. folder. I tried to disable the system restore for Windows. Remove temporary files and run some scans. Then reboot the computer and enable the system restore again. Since then I have not seen this virus either.

For a while I thought the 3rd virus might have been gone as well - the printer spool one. But this evening it did appear in a scan.
So now I try to turn off the printer service spool application under computer administration to see if that will prevent it from appearing.

So maybe next week I will post again with an update as to whether any of the viruses have returned.
I seem to remember from the past that it did happen that they were suddenly gone for some days before coming back so I would not be too sure that is the end of it. And in any case there is still the issue with printer spool virus.

I tried to run a scan with this program: Prevx site
It did not find anything.

I might try the other suggestion as well to see if that one finds anything and post the result here. But I will just wait a few days to see how things go from here on.
thanks.

For reference read this article.

Clean Printer Drivers.

Unless you are sure of what you are doing do not remove anything, ask before.

You may however run this cleaning tool.

I have not seen the porn collection since last wednesday and I have not seen the system restore virus either.

Regarding the print spool problem it did not occur when I had the service disabled. However, I tried to follow your instructions and I ran the cleaning tool after having enabled the service. It seems to have helped since it has stopped generating this massive amount of print spool files and thus the virus alert on AVG has ceased to appear.

So currently I am not bothered anymore atleast according to the reports I get from my anti malware software.
So I guess this closes the case ? or is there anything else to take into consideration ?

thank you.

Time for some housekeeping
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /u

The other tools we used you decide if you want to keep them.
