      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

Crashing PC, Broken DNS

3 posts in this topic

Hi,

I'm trying to assist a friend whose PC is having problems. It is running windows XP. Symptoms are that websites can't be opened by domain name (although email still works). Using an IP address to access a website does work, so I'm guessing that his DNS system has been corrupted or hijacked some how. I can ping IP addresses on the internet but not domain names.

I've downloaded various Antivirus / anti malware programs using another machine to a USB stick and transferred them to the problematic machine.

Trying to run antivirus software causes the machine to crash part way through the scan. The machine then goes into a loop, restarting and crashing again. Switching it off for a while and then powering up usually allows you to boot up again. Just using F8 to select booting into safe mode also results in a crash / restart.

I have tried AVG, Spybot, Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware - they all do the same thing, scan and then crash part way through.

I have read the FAQ and realise that the log files from the unsuccessful scans may be needed. I don't have access to the machine right now but will get copies of the logs if they will be useful.

I did manage to successfully run HiJackThis, log file below. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.

Hi Colin B, and Welcome to SWI

I suggest printing out each set of instructions and reading the entire post before proceeding. It will make following them easier. Please follow the directions in the order listed.

I've downloaded various Antivirus / anti malware programs using another machine to a USB stick and transferred them to the problematic machine.

You need to isolate that USB flash drive for now. It's possible that as soon as you inserted it into this system that it was infected, and it could infect other systems it's inserted into. If you need to download a utility that you can't download from this system, download it on a clean system and burn it to CD/DVD to transfer to the infected system.

Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.

Click on Tools, General Settings.

Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).

After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:

  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Private Data).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.

Now you need to run HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only." Place a check next to the following entries (if they are still there):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DSP24] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Dsp24Set.exe" /n

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Run] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\regsvr32.exe" /s "C:\Documents and Settings\Francis\Application Data\sp1\mstalk.dll"

O21 - SSODL: glyBBzSHpdhfoR - {44868734-EE2C-2D9E-4FE1-50A86BD9466C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpdb.dll (file missing)

Now close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:

Click Start. Open My Computer.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".

Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.

Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.

Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Dsp24Set.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\Francis\Application Data\sp1\mstalk.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpdb.dll

Now you need to hide the files you un-hid earlier:

Click Start. Open My Computer.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading unselect "Show hidden files and folders".

Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.

Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Go to Start > Run, type in CMD and hit the Enter key

In the CMD window that opens, Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns

If you type this in, note the space between the g /f

It needs to be there.

Now let's check some settings on your system.

  • Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  • Then right click on your Default Connection
  • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
  • Left click on Properties
  • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
  • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Reboot your system.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.

Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.

If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please post a new HijackThis log, the log from MBAM, and note any errors encountered.

Are you still having a DNS problem?
