Hi there,

I've been having problems with the sound on my pc for a while which i can't seem to sort. I've tried downloading and reinstalling the drivers but no matter what i do it doesn't seem to work. The message I get is

The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware.

Note: If you uninstalled audio software without restarting your pc, restart now, then run this setup again.

When I tried to install the first time I got the option to uninstall the existing files which I did then restart my pc, but I still get these options and then the above message.

Could someone please help or point me in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance

Ali

Hi agangelus,

First I need to know what sound device you're using.

Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Device Manager.

Scroll down to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.

Expand that list, and tell me which items are listed.

After that, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post please post the one that is not minimized.

Hi Ali,

Sorry for the delay. I was away for a week and forgot to let you know.

Back in Device Manager, right-click this and click Uninstall:

Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver

Restart the computer (it will install itself again automatically) and see if the sound is okay now.

Hi there,

Sorry again for taking so long to get back to you  (hope you had a good week away). I'm going over to my friends house this week and will try what you suggested then let you know the outcome.

Thanks again
Ali :D

Hi there,

Just checked, and for some reason the item you suggested uninstalling seems to be gone. Not sure why as i've asked my friend if she'd done anything, but she said she hadn't.

Kind regards
Ali :unknw:

Something for you to try:

Right-click this entries and click Update Driver:

SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio

If no driver could be found, right-click it, click Properties, Roll Back the driver to the previous version, and restart the computer to see if there's sound now.

Are there any other sound entries with a yellow exclamation mark?

Are you sure the sound isn't just muted somewhere?

Hi there,

Sorry for the time, I haven't seen my friend for a while. Anyway, have done all you suggested but still nothing. The sound is definitely not muted. I tried the rollback suggestion but the message below displayed in the info box when I clicked on properties -

No drivers are installed for this device.

If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter.

Definitely no other exclaimation marks.

Many thanks
Ali :)

Hello agangelus

screen317 is unavailable. I will be helping you.

First of all, please go here
Run the scan, then download and install the recommended driver/s.

Does this fix the problem?

If you still have no sound, then I need some information please.

Is there a microphone plugged into the computer? If there is, disconnect it please.
Are the speakers connected?
Have you recently installed a new Windows system or upgraded the system?
Have you recently installed any new hardware?
Can you remember what you were doing on the machine just before this problem started?

Please go Start-->Control Panel-->Sounds and Audio Devices.
Under Volume make sure mute is not ticked.
What is written at the top next to the Volume icon?
Is the Device Volume bar at halfway or higher?
Click Advanced---Are all those Volume Levels turned on, and are all the mute boxes empty?
Please do the same with Speaker Volume.
Click Advanced and make sure the Speaker Setup is correct.

Under Sounds can you hear Window sounds?

Under Audio---what is the Default Device?

Under Voice--- what is the Default Device?
Please click---Test Hardware---does the microphone work?

Under Hardware---click each item in the list (one at a time)-->click Properties---under Device status---does it say “This device is working properly” for every item?

Hi there,

Couldn't install missing drivers as there was a charge of $29.99. Please advise. There is already driver detection software on the pc as my friend purchased it last month. It's called Driver Detective.

Hello agangelus

Sorry. My bad. I didn’t post the second link to download the drivers.

However, please run Driver Detective and install/upgrade all the drivers they recommend.

Let me know if this solves the problem.

Hi there,

Have just done what you suggested, but an error happened with a blue screen with the message -

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.

If this is the first time you've seen this error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for adequate disk space.......

Check for BIOS updates.....

Technical info

Stop: 0x0000007e (0x0000005, 0xb22d146d, 0xbacffa74, 0xbacff770)

portcls.sys - address b22d146d base at bssd1000, datestamp 48025ccc

beginning dump of physical memory.
physical memory dump complete
contact systems administrator or technical support.

I've left out some of the stuff which didn't seem relative, as I would have ended up writing a book.

Many thanks
Ali :)

Hello agangelus

Your computer appears to have some serious hardware problems.

0x0000007e stop error messages are mostly hard drive or ram related.

On Microsoft Site:

Incompatible audio drivers.
A damaged device driver or system service.

At this point, considering that it is not malware related, I cannot really help you much more.

I recommend visiting the great people at Tech Support Forum, who may be better able to analyze your current problems and hardware to provide a solution.

Sorry that I am not able to help you at this time.
