Yeah, coolwebsearch has been winning its battle against me for the past 2 or so weeks.

Ran adaware, CWShredder, etc., but no dice. Tried some creative tinkering, no dice.

Here is the hijack this log. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello andyroo,

I can help you with this. Please reply to this thread if you still have this problem. The board software will alert me by email that you have replied and I will write up the fix if you haven't been able to resolve the problem.

thank you! i've been away for a little, but thanks a ton for getting to me.

I have CoolWebSearch and I wasnt able to get rid of it with CWShredder. I recently kinda got rid of some of the "symptoms" of it by turning off "enable 3rd party extensions" in the IE options, and then disabling some startup items in MSCONFIG. I can now set my home page and it does not revert back to what CWS wants. The startup items I disabled were:

crxo.exe
hpztsb08.exe
javabs.exe

My reasons for disabling these 3 were based on suspsicion only.

After doing all this, the latest update of Ad-aware does not find any CoolWebSearch on my computer, however, i do still feel that my computer is still running slightly slower then it should (might be my imagination). CWS is still there and the three startup things remain in my msconfig as options, unchecked though.

Also, when i logged on as a different user, the CWS home page was there.

So, can you help me get rid of CWS once and for all?

Hi, yes I'm here :) Sorry - did not see your messages from the 12th.

Windows Media player is most likely infected. Delete that and get a fresh copy from Miscrosoft.
http://www.microsoft...en&categoryid=4

Also, we need to update your HijackThis tool. Open HijackThis.exe and press *config* {bottom right corner} and then press *Misc. Tools* at the top. Next press *check for online update* and you should see version 1.98.0 available. Download that.

P.S. If you have any problems getting the update. Simply delete your old version of HijackThis and download the new version from this link.

or here:

Scan and post a fresh HJT log please :)

Andyroo,

Yes, I seemed to be having a subscription problem too, but it seems to be working OK now as I got that last one- I'm just behind in my replies. We need at this point a fresh Hijackthis log, I think. It has a new version now too so update it first.

Open HijackThis.exe and press *config* {bottom right corner} and then press *Misc. Tools* at the top. Next press *check for online update* and you should see version 1.98.2 available. Download that.

P.S. If you have any problems getting the update. Simply delete your old version of HijackThis and download the new version from this link.

I hope you can respond today. Come tomorrow I may not be online for a couple of days with a Tropical Storm expected to become a hurricane and headed our way - depends on what happens with that.

Hi Snorman,

The fix I am about to post for Andyroo will not apply to your PC as the infection puts random named files on your system and not all will show on the HJT log, but you need to follow the guidelines here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/rd/faq

Get HijackThis and post a log in a new topic of your own. It simply isn't feasible to post one fix all for this hijack in a single thread.

@Andyroo,

Download this file from here:

Getservice.zip
http://www.bleepingc.../getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

Well, Heck. None of what I am looking for in the HijackThis log or that last report is there :scratchhead: You're sure that's the whole report, right?

Let's proceed and see what we get with these steps.

1. Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads...AboutBuster.zip

or here:
http://malwarebytes....AboutBuster.zip

Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

2. You already have Adaware installed. Make sure it's up to date. Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. You should now see Reference File # : 01R331 08.07.2004 or higher listed.

3. Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.

4. Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

5. Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and see if you find the a service called

Workstation NetLogon Service

Network Security Service

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper <---note - you will see two others similar, we are looking only for the one that says "Helper" at the end

If you see any of those in the list, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

If you do not see any of the above listed exactly as I have typed them - then skip this step and go on to the next.

6. Reboot to Safe Mode
How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

7. Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kfwzs.dll/sp.html#96676

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kfwzs.dll/sp.html#96676

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kfwzs.dll/sp.html#96676

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

and delete this file (if found)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kfwzs.dll

8. Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Follow the directions that popup in the first screen (including how to save the log). Then click on the *Start* button and then OK to start the scan.. This will scan your computer for any bad files and delete them. Save the report and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

9. Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found, if any

10. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

11. Reboot to normal mode,

Scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.

12. NOTE:Two possibly three files may have been deleted from your computer by the hijacker and may need to be replaced.

Control.exe
hosts (with no extension)
SDHelper.dll (if you are using Spybot Search & Destroy)

If control. exe is missing
Go here: http://www.spywarein...es.html#control and download the version of control.exe for your operating system. For Windows XP, copy it to c:\windows\system32.

Download the Hoster from here: http://members.aol.c...dbee/hoster.zip
Press 'Restore Original Hosts' and press 'OK'
Exit Program.
Note: if you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself

If you have Spybot S&D installed and SDHelper.dll is missing, replace it here:
http://www.spywarein...s.html#sdhelper and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing your Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
........................................................
13. Additionally, Please check your ActiveX security settings. They may have been changed by this CWS variant to allow ALL ActiveX!! If they have been changed, reset your active x security settings in IE as recommended.

Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.

Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

14. Finally, do an online scan at the following site. Let it remove any infected files found.
Trend Micro (PC-cillin) - Free on-line Scan
http://housecall.antivirus.com

Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please.

Hi Andyroo I am just wondering what exactly your problem is..... I read through a few of the posts do you just have coolwebsearch browser hijack? You should try adaware spybot S&D also Spy Sweeper. Spy Sweeper removes things that adaware and spybot donít. Run all 3 progs then tell me if that fixes ur prob.. Spy Sweeper has helped me fix peoples computers with browser hijacks. If your really sick of it you should format :)

elitesect,

Adaware, Spybot, or Spysweeper can't remove this variant of Coolwebsearch either.

Try looking at all these threads on CWS_NS3 which is what Spysweeper calls this variant but can't remove :hmmm:

The fix for this one is very intricate...try reading more on it. :)

it runs perfect! thanks for everything

but...there's one thing that is bothering me. before i came here, in my desperate attempt at solving my problem, i went to run ---> msconfig then under startup items i disabled 3 things:

crxo.exe <--- very sure that is spyware, came up in adaware when i first ran that a million times and couldnt delete it

hpztsb08.exe <--- this looked fishy so i disabled it

javabs.exe <---- same as above

after disabling these things my computer went back to somewhat normalcy. but...they are still there in my msconfig startup items (still unchecked though)

is there any way to get rid of these once and for all? or am i just being paranoid?

Great, glad to hear it

This file is ok: hpztsb08.exe
Program Title: HPDJ Taskbar Utility
Comments: Driver for HP Deskjet 3550

The other two: crxo.exe & javabs.exe were part of the infection, but the files should now be gone.

To remove them from the Msconfig menu try this:

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup

Now that your PC is clean (finally!), make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help :).

How to Stop Hijackers & Spyware Infections, And other malware too!
http://forum.gladiat...?showtopic=9857

Watch Windows Update closely for Service Pack 2 for XP coming very soon (it's actually available now if you have Automatic Updates enabled). Get it when available and it will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE :)
http://v4.windowsupd.../en/default.asp

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 1.2 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft...s/mbsahome.mspx

You might also consider an alternative browser and use IE only when needed for sites that require ActiveX and are trusted (like Windows update or the online virus scanners). I use Firefox for 99% of my everyday surfing (using it right now in fact). It's free and very easy to setup, understand and use without many of the vulnerabilities that IE has. Or feel free to search around for info on other alternative browsers.
