      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.

Hi Jonas2, and Welcome Back

I suggest printing out each set of instructions and reading the entire post before proceeding. It will make following them easier. Please follow the directions in the order listed.

my brother was doing a virus scan on my friends computer and found around 30 of them, he could only delete 1.

What virus scanner detected the viruses but was unable to remove them? Was it avast, the installed antivirus?

Run Avast and open the options menu.

Select "Program settings", then "Update (basic)", and under Virus database click on the link for Update now.

After the virus signatures have updated, close Avast.

Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.

Click on Tools, General Settings.

Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).

After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Now reboot to Safe Mode - Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.

If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:

  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click the Delete button.
    - For IE 7:
    • In the window that opens, click the Delete all button.
    • When prompted, place a check in: "Also delete files and settings stored by add-ons.", click Yes.

    - For IE8:

    • In the window that opens place a checkmark in all options.
    • Click the Delete and OK buttons.

Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

  • Go to Tools > Options > Privacy.
  • Click "clear your recent history".
  • Go to the Advanced tab, and click the Clear Now button
  • Click OK to close the Options window

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click OK.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.

Now open Avast and perform a full system scan and remove or clean anything found.

Restart the system.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • If the program won't start, go to MBAM's program folder (normally C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware), rename mbam.exe to a random file name (keep the .exe extension) and double-click on it to start the program.

[*]The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.

[*]When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

[*]Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

[*]When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)

[*]The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

[*]Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.

Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.

If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

I see that you have a P2P (Peer-to-Peer) file sharing program installed (BitTorrent DNA). I highly recommend that you consider uninstalling it. Not only is BitTorrent a P2P program that poses a potential threat, DNA is a distibution scheme that uses your "contributed" bandwidth to reduce their bandwidth to deliver content to others, and it's one possible cause for a slowdown. There's more on DNA here:

http://www.tmk.com/blog/?p=10

http://www.bittorrent.com/dna/?csrc=splash

P2P programs represent a security threat to the information on your system as they allow others to access your system. Just look at the number of high profile compromises in the news as a result of P2P software:

Data about Obama's helicopter breached via P2P?

Leak of congressional ethics document prompts calls for cybersecurity probe

Walter Reed suffers peer-to-peer data breach

More listed here:

Data Security Threats And Breaches

You should read the link at the bottom of that page:

Why File Sharing Networks Are Dangerous (Dartmouth study, .pdf file)

In many cases P2P programs also represent a risk of infection from the program itself, as some have installed adware/spyware, or other programs without consent. Even if the program itself is clean, many P2P networks are riddled with malware, and it's often the newest, most difficult to remove malware. There are many risks associated with P2P programs, none are worth the risks.

Please post a new HijackThis log, the log from MBAM, the log from Security Check (checkup.txt), and note any errors encountered.

Hi, when the virus search was done I, unlike my brother, checked the info on the so called "viruses".

It said something about it couldent search the files becouse they were password protected. So I don't think they were viruses.

when the virus search was done I, unlike my brother, checked the info on the so called "viruses".

It said something about it couldent search the files becouse they were password protected. So I don't think they were viruses.

Were those by any chance ZIP or Rar archive files? There's always the "potential" that they could be if they couldn't be scanned because they were password protected, but there's no way to tell. A scanner needs to be able to temporarily extract the contents to scan them, and can't if the archive is password protected.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE), JRE 6 Update 17".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the Window that opens, select Windows, and check the "agree" box and click "Continue".
    - Note: If you are running an x64 (64-bit) version of Windows, you need to install both the Windows (x32) and Windows x64 version.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java™ 6 Update 13
    • Java™ 6 Update 2

[*]Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

[*]Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

[*]Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

[*]Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version (the x64 version is jre-6u17-windows-x64.exe).

    - Note: If you are running Vista, you may need to right-click on the installation file and select Run as Administrator.

Your version of Adobe Acrobat Reader is outdated and vulnerable. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following program:

Adobe Reader

Then go to to http://www.adobe.com and download and install the current version, When you install it, be careful to UNcheck any optional toolbar installation unless you really want the toolbar.

Create a Restore Point

  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Click on “open System Protection”.
  • On the System Protection tab in System Properties click on Create.
  • Give the restore point an appropriate name and click Create.
  • When the "The restore point was created successfully" window appears, click OK

Run Disk Cleanup

  • Go to Start > Run and type the below line:
    cleanmgr
  • Click OK
    • If you have more than one drive, select the drive Windows is installed on
    • Click OK

[*]When Disk Cleanup opens, select the More Options tab

[*]In the System Restore section (bottom of window), click Cleanup

    • In the confirmation window that opens, click Yes

[*]Now click on the Disk Cleanup tab and select the following items:

    • Downloaded Program Files
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Recycle Bin
    • Temporary Files

    [*]Click OK

[*]in the confirmation window, select Yes (Disk Cleanup will close).

Please consider updating to Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) contains all the updates released since SP1 plus support for new types of hardware and emerging hardware standards.

It is now available via Windows Update or as a standalone installation here.

If you have trouble installing the Service Pack, here is some information on troubleshooting Windows Vista and service pack installation issues:

To help keep malware off your system:

  •
  • Keep Windows updated at Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
  • Keep your other applications updated, there are vulnerabilities that rely on exploits through other programs like Java, Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, Flash, and others.
  • Run a program like Secunia Software Inspector Scan to see what programs need to be updated.
  • Be careful with flash drives, as they can spread infections. See this post on USB/flash drive safety.
  • Stay away from P2P software; even with a clean P2P program, their networks are often riddled with malware.
  • Don't click on attachments or links in e-mail, and read your e-mail in text-only mode for the highest safety.
  • Don't click on links received in instant message programs.
  • In place of Internet Explorer, browse with Firefox with the NoScript and AdBlock Plus add-ons.
  • A HOSTS file will prevent Internet Explorer from communicating with sites known to be associated with adware or spyware. A good regularly updated HOST file is MVPS HOSTS File, available at http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm.
  • A free non-resident utility to prevent the installation of ActiveX-based malware is JavaCool's SpywareBlaster. For real-time protection, there is SpywareGuard. Both are available at http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/products.html.
  • I recommend reading Tony Klein's article So How did I get Infected in the First Place? at http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/index.php?showtopic=60955

Does your problem appear resolved?
