Hi everyone, I was surfing and have Spybot,Winpatrol, spywareblaster, NAV 2004 and was warned of requested page changes. Denied and ran cws shredder and deleted searchx and ran HT and took out RO, R1,BHO and tried to delete FO &F2. had trouble starting and they are back. Read FAQ and followed instructions. Any advice will be appreciated. :D ps have default page in internet options set to rogers and HT default says about:blank?

Due to the time passed and the fact that you are running an older version ...
  • HijackThis ...
    • Double click on "My Computer" to open it.
    • Double click on the local "C-Drive" to open it.
    • Click on "File" => "New Folder" and name it HJT. i.e. The folder will be C:\HJT.
    • Please download HijackThis from any of the following locations:
    • spywareinfo.com
    • subratam.org
    • tools.zerosrealm.com
  • Install/Unzip it into C:\HJT.
  • Only run HijackThis from C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. That way we can ensure that we have the backup files available in the event that they are needed.
  • Run HijackThis, click on scan and wait for the scan to finish.
  • The "Scan" button will change to "Save Log", click on it and simply press "Save" on the window that will appear.
  • Notepad will open with a copy of the log.
    • Click on "Edit" => "Select All".
    • Click on "Edit" => "Copy". This will copy the contents of the Notepad instance to the clipboard.
  • Please post your entire log here for analysis.

Hi PGPhantom, I followed your instructions-first time in safe mode- scary stuff-and everything was deleted that was there to be deleted. Only one user and under D &S > Owner>loc. settings had TIF-0 and I deleted temp files.Other directories present.

Network services>loc. settings>TIF has IE5 and temp is empty

Allusers>no local settings

Default User>loc. settings>TIF has IE5 and temp has various MSN###.fdr files,IE5, plus other temp and misc files

Local Service>local settings> TIF has IE5 and temp has IE5

I guess these files should be there- did I have a serious problem or hijacker?

thanks again!-tom367

Only two more to delete using HijackThis:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ca.red.client...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ca.red.client...//www.yahoo.com

Then the log is clean :)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
    • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware (Ad-Aware SE Build 1.03) from here.
    • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
    • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
    • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
    • Once the definitions have been updated:
    • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
      • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
      • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
        • "Automatically save logfile"
        • Automatically quarrantine objects prior to removal"
        • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
        • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
      • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
      • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
      • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
      • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
      • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
      • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
      • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
      • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
      • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
      • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
      • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol) and select the following:
        • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
        • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
        • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
      • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
        • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
        • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
        • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
        • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
      • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
      • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
      • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
      • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
    • Close all programs except ad-aware.
    • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
    • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
    • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
  • Download the latest version of Spybot from either:
    • Install spybot and by default is should install into C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy.
    • Run Spybot by clicking on "Start" => "Programs" => "Spybot - Search & Destroy" => "Spybot - Search & Destroy".
    • The first time you run it, allow it to create a backup of your registry when prompted. This will take a few minutes to complete.
    • Click on "Search for Updates".
    • If any updates are found, place a check mark next to each and click on "Download Updates".
    • Click on "Immunize" and once it detect what has or has not been blocked, block all remaining items by clicking on the green plus sign next to immunize at the top.
    • Click on "Search & Destroy" => "Check for Problems".
    • If any problems are found, be sure to click on "Fix Selected Problems".
