Hello Everyone,

Just yesterday I started noticing a problem, or issue at least, with my computer. Twice when I got up and left the computer on for a short time (i.e. 15-20 minutes), with the web browser on, the screen resolution had changed when I got back on the computer.

I have no idea whether this is related to some sort of malware issue or not, but due to previous experience here I have confidence that I can receive good advice. I appreciate the help.

The reason I wonder if malware might be involved is because the day before I got a notification from my anti-virus program, avast, that I hadn't seen before. It said something to the effect that "a virus or trojan attempted to install on your computer, but was prevented. No further action is required." After this I updated and ran scans with both Malwarebytes and Spybot. Neither of them found anything. I had never had this screen resolution before, however, so that made me wonder.

If this is not a result of any malware, is it some sort of operating system issue? This is a fairly new computer, which is running Windows 7. I also have Office 2007, which is new to me.

I just ran HijackThis and will post the log. There's a whole lot of stuff on there that's a complete mystery to me.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Hello nasdaq,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the help.

I am still having the same issue. The screen resolution can change on its own when I get up and leave the computer for a period of time. This doesn't happen every time, however, it's not consistent.

I ran HijackThis and will post the new log. This time, when I ran it, HijackThis came back with a notice that the system denied access to the Hosts file and that any hijack entries in the Hosts file would not be removed. The message then went on to give instructions on how remove them. This has not happened before. I wrote down the instructions but did not do anything further as I want to wait to see what happens here, and also it's not at all clear to me what the instructions are talking about.

Here is the log. Thank you for your help.

Your HijackThis log is clean.

This time, when I ran it, HijackThis came back with a notice that the system denied access to the Hosts file and that any hijack entries in the Hosts file would not be removed.

On Wndows 7 you should run HijackThis as an Administrator.
===

This process is unknown to me. What is the (OEM) computer manufacturer's name? What does it do?
c:\windows\system32\oem\setEvent.exe

===

The screen resolution can change on its own when I get up and leave the computer for a period of time.
Remove you screen saver or the Monitor Power saving function if one of them is enable.

If that does not solve your issue, look to replace your Monitor or Graphics card driver.

Follow some of the recommendations on this link.

Hello nasdaq,

Thanks for your help.

I don't have the faintest idea what that process is. In fact, I don't know what many (half or more?)of the items on the log are. Now that you bring it up, is there a way to figure out what they are and if I need them, or where they came from or if I can get rid of them? If this is related, I've also noticed in task manager that there seem to be far more processes running than ever were on my old computer (i've only had this one a few months). Something else I wonder about is the long list of processes that refer to "(file missing)". Is that significant, i.e. what files are missing, do I need them, where do I get the files if I do?

Anyway, the computer is a Gateway.

I don't believe I have a screen saver, at least I've never knowingly installed one. The monitor is one that powers down if there's no activity, however. How would I disable that? I do want to find out for sure if it's just the monitor power-saver or if it is related to another problem with the monitor or graphics card, as I'd want those taken care of under the warranty (unless it's just a matter of downloading new drivers, I guess). I don't have a huge problem with the screen resolution resetting, as long as it's not due to some sort of malware program doing something to the computer. I forgot to mention this initially, but when I find the resolution changed it goes back to it's original resolution when I reboot. So it's a bit inconvenient, and I'd rather it didn't happen, but not a major problem in itself, especially if it only occurs once in a while.

Thank you again for your help.

HijackThis is not quite to par with Windows 7 - 64 bit system. Nothing to worry about.

To find out what setEvent.exe does you will have to stop the process via the Task Manager.

Look on GateWay's site for the latest driver for your computer model.

I forgot to mention this initially, but when I find the resolution changed it goes back to it's original resolution when I reboot.

Could be caused by Hardware problem. When your grapics card bet too hot something goes wrong and the resolution change.
You boot up it cools a bit and all is well until the next issuu. Just an opinion.
If this is the case I would not wait for my warranty to expire.

Gateway has a forum to help with some issues.
Google this string Gegateway forums find one for you computer model and explain your issues.

Panda has an online scanner to check for malware. It's 64 bit ready. Try it.

Hello nasdaq,

Thank you again for the help.

This brings up a couple of questions.

What happens if I stop the process in task manager (let me display my ignorance here)? How would I know what the process does, do I just watch for something to stop working? What if it's something important, would everything just revert to the original settings when I reboot?

And I guess, generally, how do I know whether the processes that are running, according to task manager, are something that I need (it looks like there are 60 of them at the moment - about double what was on my old computer I think)? For instance, there is something called RunCMD_x64, described as "RunCmd" followed by a short string chinese(?) characters. How do I know if this is something I want? Or, there's a "button manager"? There are others that have a variety of characters that seem related to some program. I expect these are all necessary, but is everything that shows up there? Anyway, it's just confusing.

Also, would you want me to run the on-line scan and post a log, or whatever sort of result it has?

I will check out the gateway forums.

Thanks again for your help.

RunCMD_x64, described as "RunCmd" followed by a short string chinese(?) characters.

This is required on a 64 bit system. The chinese characters may be some non ASCII characters the the operating system is unable to read.

Or, there's a "button manager"? There are others that have a variety of characters that seem related to some program.

This is probably required for some programs. Such as this one on your log.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Gateway Photo Frame\ButtonMonitor.exe
===

You can check at the Gateway forum and you can also find out about the setEvent.exe process.

The scan is a Virus Scan. Just want to make sure your computer is clean.

Hello nasdaq,

I posted a question at a gateway forum earlier today, so will wait to see what comes of that. I'll do a separate post concerning the processes, there are also some programs taht were originally installed that I don't know anything about - that Photo Frame happens to be one of them - so I might ask about those while I'm asking. Anyway, thanks for the advice about Gateway forums, hopefully this particular one will be good.

I just tried to run the virus scan. It got part way through the process then came back with a message that it had encountered error and was working it and said to try back later. I'll do that. Is there anything unusual about getting an error message there? The message didn't contain any information about what sort of error occurred. Is there a different scan I should try?

Thank you again for your help.

Find out about some of the programs installed by Gateway. Photo frame is listed.

Your error may be some bad sector on your Hard driver. May be a CHKDSK should be run.

Hello nasdaq,

I just went to the active scan site before coming here. I got the same error message when I tried to run the full scan, so I tried the quick scan instead. That ran properly and found nothing. So does that still suggest possible bad sectors on the hard drive? I have a vague recollection of the chkdsk command from dos days, but haven't done it in Windows. Is there a program to run it? Or would I have to run it from the dos prompt?

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry I should not assume that all are familiar with these commands.

I have a Vista and I can get to the Prompt by clicking the start button and then select Command prompt.

Also if you can get to your RUN box, type CMD and click the OK button.

Thanks nasdaq,

I found the dos prompt, I didn't know you could get to it from the run box. But now there's another obstacle. When I try to run chkdsk it tells me access is denied because I do not have sufficient privileges and to invoke the utility running in elevated mode. I'm not exactly sure what "elevated mode" means. I am an (i.e. the) administrator, according to the account information in control panel, anyway, if that has anything to do with it. There are no separate user accounts on the computer. Do I have to log in as an administrator somehow? And if so, how?

Thanks again for your help.

Hello nasdaq,

I haven't had time to even touch my computer for a couple of days, so wasn't able to do anything more.

I was able to run the chkdsk this morning, it didn't find any bad sectors. Afterward I tried the online scan. It ran properly this time and came up with one threat. I will post the log/report.

Before this, when I turned on the computer this morning, I also decided to update and run a malwarebytes scan, since I hadn't done on since this started. During the scan it came back and prompted that a rootkit had been found, and recommended deleting, which I did. I hadn't seen this before, but possibly I hadn't had a rootkit before and so wouldn't have gotten the prompt. Anyway, malwarebytes didn't say that it did anything in particular, like removing the file, when I clicked the delete prompt and the log at the end said that no malicious items had been found. So I wonder if it actually found anything or did anything or if something else was going on. Also, my screen resolution changed during the time that the malwarebytes scan was running.

I will post the activescan log. Thanks again for your help.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.

Uninstall any CD emulation software before you run GMER, Daemon Tools and Daemon Tools Lite
Alcohol 120% and 52%
AstroBurn
.

If any of these emulation software are installed.

Please download SPTD-installer and double-click it to run. Select uninstall to remove the program.

See this FAQ is you need additional information.
http://www.duplexsecure.com/faq/

These can be reinstalled later.

  • Extract the contents of the GMER zipped file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on GMER.exe to run it.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan, click NO, and then use the following settings.
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than your Systemdrive (the drive you have Windows installed on)
    • Show All (don't miss unchecking this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • When its finished, click on the Save button, and in the File name area, type in "gmer.txt".
  • Save it to a convenient location such as your Desktop and post the contents of the log.

Hello nasdaq,

Thanks for your help.

I guess I need a little more education. I don't really know what CD emulation software is, but I don't think I've installed any. I'm not at all sure about the programs that came installed on the computer, however. How would I know if any of them are CD emulation? I do have a CD program, which I've only used once, called Nero (I think it also makes dvd's). It also came pre-installed.

I'm not familiar with any of the programs you listed and I don't see any of them in the "all programs" menu, for what that's worth.

Thanks again.

hello nasdaq,

I ran the GMER scan. It didn't seem to have any difficulty running. When it completed it displayed a notice that "GMER hasn't found any system modification". Other than that, it didn't create a log file that I'm aware of. Hopefully that is good news, i.e. that there's nothing there to find, rather than that there's something there that it couldn't find.

Anyway, let me know how to proceed from here. Incidentally, I still have not gotten any response from the Gateway forum posted at concerning the screen resolution resetting, so will try another one.

Thank you for your help.

Hello nasdaq,

Well, that didn't work either. There were some slight differences in what I found, from what was in the examples. For one, I didn't have a "Windows Modules Installer", only a "Windows Installer", so I tried that. It looked generally similar to the dialog box shown in the example, but not identical. It showed that it was already set to manual. The dialog box also had a "Service Status" section which wasn't shown on the example. This showed the service as "stopped". There was an option to start, so I did this as well. Afterward, though, I got the same message, that windows resource protection could not start.

I did read down in the comments on the web page and saw that others had the same problem, but no solutions apparently.

Is there something else to try?

Sorry to be taking so much of your time.

These services are not the same.

Windows Installer (Service Name: msiserver). <- Enables management of Windows updates (add/remove).

Windows Modules Installer (Service Name: TrustedInstaller). <- Enables installation, modification, and removal of Windows updates and optional components.
The file responsibly for this is
C:\Windows\servicing\TrustedInstaller.exe

Check this article
http://forums.techar...help/713497.htm

Read it all but refer particularly to post No 4.

Can you get access to that service as an admin.
Is it set to Automatic?

I picked the services tab, Windows Module installer was not on the list so wasn't able to get any further. I did notice that the forum was for Windows Vista. I have Windows 7. I don't know if that's important, though.

So, what to try next?

Hello nasdaq,

Thanks again for your help.

That file, as written, is not in my computer.

So I did an explorer search of C:\Windows for TrustedInstaller. What I found was 2 instances of TrustedInstaller.exe.mui; 1 shown in the folder en-US(C:\Windows\servicing), which I found afterward in the Windows\servicing folder; the other was in a folder called amd64_microsoft-windows-trustedinstaller... followed by a very long string of characters (so long, in fact that I couldn't see the end of it). I couldn't locate a folder beginning with amd64, however. I also found 1 TrustedInstaller file identified as an application (no .exe extension) in the same, or similar, folder beginning with amd64...

Is any of that useful?

Thanks.

Lets go back some.

Run the SFC /SCANNOW Command - use this tutorial.

http://www.sevenforu...le-checker.html

Make sure you are using an elevated command prompt.

Keep me posted.

Hello nasdaq,

I tried the sfc /scannow command and still got the same message, that "windows resource protection could not start the repair service". I was in an elevated command prompt, at least according to the instructions. What's next to try?

Based on what we're doing, should I assume that there is not a malware issue involved?

Incidentally, after tomorrow I will not be around for about a week and a half. Not sure if I'll have time to check back tomorrow, but I will if I can. Otherwise, I won't be doing anything with this for a while, but will get back to it.

Thanks for your help.

When you return run this tool.
I keep my topics open for 2 weeks. If by any change it's closed ask and it will be re-opened.

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Your latest logs do not indicate any malware.

My Microsoft's Windows 7 forum search for "windows resource protection could not start the repair service" while running SFC /Scannow.

http://social.answer...indows 7 Forums

5 topics but none regarding your resolution problem.
===

It may be worth your while to check for the latest video driver for your system.

http://support.gatew...rs/dlcenter.asp

Hope that helps.

Hello nasdaq,

Thanks for all your help.

So does this mean I don't have to be concerned about any malware, at the moment, affecting the screen resolution, or anything else?

The resolution is still resetting itself occasionally, incidentally.

I'll check out the forum topics and check for new drivers, but probably not until after tomorrow. This just reminded me I posted out on a gateway forum before I left, so I'll check that too.

If there aren't any drivers, or it doesn't take care of the problem, does that mean I should assume there is some sort of hardware issue?

Thanks again for your help.

We had a database problem yesterday and had to restore from backup.

All new posts from May 8 have been lost.

If you still need help please repeat your last post.

Hello nasdaq,

I hadn't posted anything, but just still wondering if, if a new driver doesn't fix the problem, or if there aren't any new drivers, does that mean I have a hardware problem?

Thanks for your help.

Could very well be that your graphics card is failing.

Open a topic at the Windows 7 forum, post 35 and see what you can as a fix for this error "windows resource protection could not start the repair service"

Hello nasdaq,

Thanks for all your help. If there's no malware issue, I'm wondering if we're done here? I don't want to take up more of your time if there's no need. I'll look for the drivers and the other things you mention. I definitely want to get the screen resolution taken care of, especially if it's hardware related. Is there anything else I should check into or do?
