System Restore Points

Is it necessary to remove old System Restore Points when trying to combat a spyware/adware problem?

Nope, it's not necessary and, as far as I know, there is really no "official" stance on it. But it is recommended that you leave one restore point that you know works and is clear in case something screws up big time.
