 Hi all, I run Win XP with Sygate firewall and Avast virus protection. Avast notified me of a trojan yesterday & I've spent the last 48 hrs trying to get rid of it, it just keeps coming back. I have Spybot and Spysweeper both up to date. Just discovered Hijack this, wondered if it might show any answers.
Here is the log after running Spybot:

Hello Cherry

You are running NewDotNet. If you installed it on purpose, I strongly recommend that you get rid of it. If you didn't, then definitely get rid of it.... To do so, follow the directions here.

It may even be wise to turn off (unload) any software firewalls before removing it just to be sure. Just make sure they are set to reload upon reboot.

Because windows retains a record of NewDotNet being installed in 'Downloaded Program Files' there is one more step.

Click on Tools.
Click on Internet Options and it opens to the General tab.
Click on the Settings button.
In the Settings window that opens click on the View Objects button.
Find the Tldctl2c Class in this window, right click on it, and then click Remove.
Close the Downloaded Program Files window.
Click OK in the Settings window.
Click OK in the Internet Options window.
Close Internet Explorer.

Download CWShredder from here, run the program, select 'fix' (not scan only) and let it fix everything that it finds.

Close all other windows except for hijackthis, perform a scan and put a check against the following items and click 'fix checked'.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank

These items are considered to be resource hogs that are not needed and it may be worthwhile to fix them with HJT. You will still be able to start them manually if you need them...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Now reboot your computer and start in safe mode. To do this, press the F8 key repeatedly as the computer starts up until you see a menu screen (if Windows starts normally, restart it again). Use the arrow keys to highlight "Safe Mode" and press Enter. For further information on safe mode click here

Make sure you have all hidden files shown

Delete the following entries:
Folders (If it still exists)
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NewDotNet
C:\Program Files\QuickSearch

Clean out your temp folders (delete the contents not the folders themselves)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested to do regularly
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\ <=You have a nasty hiding here
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
  • Empty your "Recycle Bin"
Reboot normally and post a fresh log so we can check that everything has been cleaned. You are running an outdated version of HiJackThis though, please download HijackThis v1.98 here and use that.

In the meantime you can help prevent this happening again.

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies.

I'm wondering about this file: C:\WINDOWS\ctfmon.exe
You'll have to help me with this one... Its suspicious because this is the correct path C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe
Open your Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\ctfmon.exe
rightclick the file and choose properties from the menu that appears...
Note down all the information you see in there and add it to your next reply...
Make sure you have looked at all the tabs...

Go to TrendMicro and perform an online virus scan. Let it fix anything that it finds. Do the same at Pandasoftware.

Reboot and post a fresh log

Hi Scoff,
Thanks for your help.
I have done the online virus scans & they didn't find anything.
I have two different applications called ctfmon.exe one is in Windows and the other in windows/system32.
Here are the details for the one in windows
ctfmon
type of file application
Description ctfmon
Location C:\WINDOWS
Size 32.0 KB (32,768 bytes)
Size on disk 32.0KB (32,768 bytes)

created 18 March 2004
Modified 18 March 2004
Accessed 18 March 2004

Also I have tons of XML documents inside windows (are these anything to do with the ctfmon.exe file and are they safe to delete?)

I also appear to have a dialler called CON which I cannot find and no piece of spyware gets rid of it (luckily I have broadband so it cannot dial up)

Thankyou again
Cherry :bounce:

can you have a look in the 'version' tab and copy that info here. post a fresh log and we'll see if the dialler shows up there.

I'll have limited access at the moment so sorry if it takes a bit of time for me to get back to you...
