      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.   EDIT: I have asked our hosting service to do the restore at 9 PM Central time and it looks like it will go forward at that time.  Please prepare whatever you need to prepare so that we can restore your topics when the forum is stable again.

MULTIPLE NEW CWS VARIANTS: LOG INCLUDED

10 posts in this topic

Hi, I'm working on a friends computer, and did not realize what it was hijacked by. Please help, this is well beyond my knowledge. I think that there is probably at least two new CWS variants. I ran SpyBot 1.3 (removed a dialer & about 5 CWS variants), but could not even download Ad-Aware. I'll try to save it on a disk from my computer and then upload it. Well, here's the log, any and all help is appreciated!

Heya 808chick,

First of all, that computer needs Windows patches badly. After everything is clean head to http://www.windowsupdate.com and get all the critical updates.

Now lets get rid of CWS...

Download AboutBuster from http://www.atribune.org/downloads/AboutBuster.zip and CWShredder from Merijn or from this alternate site, but don't run them yet.

Make sure Internet Explorer and all other programs are closed before continuing. Do not run IE again until the following steps are completed.

Run CWShredder.exe and click Fix to start. When it's done click Next to see the results.

Run HijackThis and click Scan. Place a check next to the following lines.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update Machine] vktkyac.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update Machine] vktkyac.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update Machine] vktkyac.exe

Click 'Fix Selected' and close Hijack.

Now we need to reboot into Safe Mode. How to boot into safe mode

Run AboutBuster.exe and do the following.

Hit Ok on the first prompt, Start on the second. Then Ok to start the removal.

A log will start to form. After the program runs save the log in a text (notepad) file.

The following Files and Folder Contents (but not the folder itself) need to be deleted while in safe mode. Make sure your settings allow you to view 'Hidden files'. Open up any explorer windows and click on 'Tools' -> 'Folder Options' -> 'View' and be sure to check off 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' as well as uncheck 'Hide Protected operating system files'. If the files etc listed are not present - Do not worry, just delete those that you can find.

  1. Folder Contents (but not the folder itself)
    • C:\Windows\Temp\
    • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ - This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
    • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
    • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
    • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
    • Empty your 'Recycle Bin'

[*]Files

  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\vktkyac.exe

After that run CWShredder.exe one more time.

Reboot back to normal mode, run Hijack This again and create a new log to post.

Hi Derith,

Thanks for your feedback. My response log & confirmation of the fixes won't be immediate, though. I'll have to find out when I can get back and run everything (this is my mom's friend's computer). I've been watching your progress with this log, & I must commend your efforts. For me it was too overwhelming! Had to get help. Well, hopefully I can get to fixing her computer this week.

I'll try and get back to you as soon as I can. I would actually email them the instructions, but my mom said that they had the Sasser worm on their comp for a couple of months & could not get rid of it. It'll be better if I can get there and do it myself, just to be safe.

Thanks again!

Edit: I just wanted to post this so you wouldn't think I left you hanging if I didn't follow up right away.

Hey Derith,

It seems like the Sasser worm is still on their system. It's causing an error & forcing the shut down of Windows. I'm pretty sure I have to run About: Buster again. I'll get rid of the Sasser worm before doing this though. (It's a real hassle when you're trying to do something & the comp shuts down on you!! :grrr:) I also ran a scan with Ad-Aware (I thought I couldn't download it because of the infections, but it looks like the link in my sig was just dead! ) So basically, it's just the Home Search & the Sasser that I have to deal with. I'll await your reply before doing anything. Thanks again.

Here's the latest log.

It looks like all the problems are gone but sometimes when you remove CWS the removal is not complete and the infection will come back in a day or two. To check this, set your computer's date ahead a few days, reboot, and create a fresh HJT log. After the log is saved you can set the correct date.

Also, Windows and IE still really need to be updated. Head to http://www.windowsupdate.com and get the critical updates ASAP.

I've seen the various helpers here use the 'clock test', I wasn't sure if this variant applied, now I do. TY.

Also, Windows and IE still really need to be updated. Head to http://www.windowsupdate.com and get the critical updates ASAP.

Will do. I didn't do it this past time because of the Sasser. I finally found out how to get rid of it  .

I had it before but I don't remember how I got rid of it!! :weee:

Hey Derith,

I apologize, I totally forgot about this thread. :gasp:

The CWS did not return, and I've told them to update their Windows. You can have this thread locked, everything seems to be okay on this end. Sorry, I'm posting from home so I don't have a log.

Thanks for all your help.
