Hi, I'm having 2 problems: one has to do with something from Norton System Works 2004 that won't go away even though the program has been uninstalled, and the other has to do with seeing the little blue computer "lights" in my task bar being constantly "on" or "lit" as if I'm sending or receiving data on the internet even when I am not doing anything, which is when they should be dark or "off." I need help with these problems. The lights lit thing prompted me to go to an online virus scanner at PC Pitstop yesterday, to verify that I don't have a virus. Their online scanner said my computer was clean. I currently have McAffee installed in my pc. A virus scan run by my McAffee software also says my system is clean, no viruses detected. I have Zone Alarm Pro running. I have Spybot Search and Destroy running, which by the way, hasn't had any updates for ages it seems. I installed Ad-Aware 6 and it found and removed 2 spyware registry entries which Spybot Search and Destroy did not find. I also ran X-Cleaner's free version to make sure. However, this problem doesn't go away. I discovered at PC Pitstop that something had changed my security settings in the restricted sites zone, allowing for unencrypted form data to be submitted to a restricted website. I had that disabled before. So I have disabled it again. I don't know what's going on, but something isn't right in my pc. As for the Norton thing, I think Norton installs some sort of a "trojan," for lack of a better term to describe it, that messes up your pc if you try to copy their software unallowed. I did NOT try to copy their software. However, since I have Windows ME running and a pc over 3 years old, I discovered that Norton System Works 2004 didn't work properly with my pc. I had all sorts of problems with it and requested a refund. I did, however, want to continue to use my previous version of Norton System Works 2002, but could not, because this thing version 2004 put in my pc disabled things so I couldn't use it. It reduced my video display way under 800 x 600 pixels and blocked my access to my cd-rw drive and zip drive and made a total mess of things. I formatted twice but each time the thing got back in again when I ran a Norton update! The last time, the registry fix tool within windows helped me to clear the problem with my video display and drives. But I could no longer uninstall the Norton program. I had to manually delete all the folders for Norton and Symantec. And there is still repeatedly something in my system which keeps repeatedly writing a file named nothing but ~ in every folder. I keep deleting it, it keeps coming back. I don't know how to fix these problems. I just formatted and reinstalled everything. I don't want to have to do it again right away. I don't know anything about editing the windows registry. I'm computer illiterate as far as anything advanced or technical is concerned. Can you suggest a fix for these problems? Thank you for any help. I don't know what's wrong. And by the way, when is Spybot Search and Destroy going to offer an update again?!? Thank you. Best Wishes, TygerStar079

We need a closer look at what's happening.
Please download Hijack this
Copy it into its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, do Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.
Be wary of strong drink. It may make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss!

When you uninstalled Norton, Did you use the ADD/REMOVE or did you use the install disk? If you used ADD/REMOVE, alot of norton gets left on your pc. The best way to compleatly remove Norton is by using the install disk. Run the disk as if you were going to install the program, when it comes to the part asking what you want to install, click on the menu to get the dropdown menu. then check "Do Not Install On Hard Drive". This will compleatly remove the program. Then run a registry cleaner to remove any leftover reg, files left behind.(any left are harmless).

Sometimes if you turn off the display monitors and then turn them back on it cures the problem with the light allways on.

Hi, Um I don't think you understand the problem. It wasn't possible to uninstall Norton properly because it had messed up my registry. I tried to use the add/remove programs thing in the control panel and couldn't find anything to remove. After the registry fix, it was as if Norton wasn't there. So ALL the Norton junk got left behind. I don't know if I dare try to use the disk now. I don't want it doing something to mess up my computer again. I had a very low display and no access to either my cd-rw drive or my zip drive. I couldn't do anything! Norton messed up my pc but good! I at least have the pc working now...... I rather not mess around with the Norton disk again. And at the beginning of the month, I have very little time to work with my computer anyway because I have to do the necessities of life that I hate doing, namely bills and groceries. So I haven't had time to turn the computer back on to try Hijack This yet. I'm working from a webtv box at the moment. Half the time, the computer is so bad, I don't want to face it. It's always freezing. It's more trouble than it's worth. But I'll get to it after I finish the first of the month stuff. Thanks. Cheers, TygerStar
