I have an older laptop (Windows 7)and like to run Ccleaner (I have Cleaner pro) occasionally but recently it will not allow me to update. It seems like something on my laptop is preventing it. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it a couple of times but nothing works. Would you please take a look at my computer to see if there is something blocking it.

Following is the error message I receive when I try to update it:

0x2fo8  A redirect request will change a secure to a non secure connection

Then there are 3 boxes below that error code and they are:

Purchase         Register               Cancel

Also, I have had an issue lately with a lot of programs "Not Responding". I apologize for the lack of information, but I am not sure what information you might need. I look forward to your instruction on what to provide you. Thank you in advance for all of your valuable time and assistance.

EDIT: Please read the Instructions http://www.spywarein...showtopic=79038and post logs...  Our helpers need details to review in order to help...

Hello deejay.
Welcome to SpywareInfo Forum.
I'm Android 8888 and I'll be helping you. Please ask questions if anything is unclear.

I suggest printing out each set of instructions or copy them to a Notepad file and reading the entire post before proceeding. It will make following them easier.

Read all of my instructions very carefully and bear in mind that any mistakes during the cleaning process may have serious consequences such as leaving the computer unbootable.

Please DO NOT run any tools on your own or make any other changes to your computer and follow the directions in the order listed during the malware removal process, otherwise you can worsen the situation rather than solve it.

Make sure to run all tools from the computer's Desktop and with Administrator privileges (i.e. right-click the tool icon and select Run as administrator).

Please run one scan at a time.

Once started the malware removal process should be completed. Even if your computer appears to be running better, it may still be infected as some infections are difficult to remove and can leave remnants on the System.

Your system has some Code Integrity and Application errors. We'll address that and the CCleaner update issue once we make sure the system is free of malware.

For now please proceed with the following instructions:

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Press the Windows key Windows_Logo_key.gif+ r on your keyboard at the same time. This will open the RUN BOX.
Type Notepad and click the OK button.
Please copy the entire contents of the code box below. To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it and select Copy.
Paste this into the open Notepad.

Save the file as fixlist.txt in to the same location as FRST64.
Right-click the FRST64 icon and select Run as administrator to run the tool.
Click the Fix button only once and wait.
When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (fixlog.txt). Please post it to your reply.

NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.

Next,

  • Please download AdwCleaner and save it to your computer's Desktop;
  • Right-click on AdwCleaner.exe and select Spcusrh.pngRun as Administrator;
  • Accept the EULA (I accept), let the database update, then click on Scan;
  • Let the scan complete. Once it's done, make sure that every item listed in the different tabs is checked and click on the Clean button. This will kill all the active processes;
  • Once the cleaning process is complete, AdwCleaner will ask to restart your computer, do it;
  • After the restart, a log will open when logging in. Please copy and paste the content of that log in your next reply;

Next,

Please scan your computer with ESET Online Scanner.

  • Click on this link to open ESET Online Scanner in a new window.
    • Click on the Scan Now button to download the esetonlinescanner_enu.exe file. Save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all your programs and browsers.
    • Please disable your antivirus program to avoid potential conflicts, improve the performance and speed up the scan.
    • Double click on esetonlinescanner_enu.exe to start ESET Online Scanner. It will open a window with the Terms of Use.
  • Check mark Download latest version of ESET Online Scanner and click the Accept button.
  • Click Yes to accept any security warnings that may appear.
  • Under Computer scan settings, check mark Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.
  • Then click Advanced settings and check mark the following options:
    • Enable detection of potentially unsafe applications
    • Clean threats automatically
  • Click the Scan button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats.
  • Click Export, and save the file to your Desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.

Note: If nothing is found, it will not produce a log.

Please re-enable your antivirus program.

To summarize, please post the entire contents of the following logs in your next reply:
fixlog.txt;
AdwCleaner clean log;
ESET log (if it produced one).

Let me know how is your computer running. Are you still having that error message when you try to update CCleaner?

Thank you.

Thank you for your assistance. I have a question before we begin, I am confused on this step:

"Save the file as fixlist.txt in to the same location as FRST64".

I have copied and saved the contents of the code box to note pad and pasted it on my desktop and named it fixlist.exe, but I am unsure how to attach it to FRST64 before I run it. I will wait to proceed until i receive your response. Thank you.

Hello deejay.

The file fixlist.exe will not work.

You just need to copy the entire content of the 'code' box and paste it to an open Notepad file.
Then, save it as a text file (.txt) with the name fixlist to your computer's Desktop. So the text file will be fixlist.txt.
Now right-click on FRST64.exe and select Run as administrator.
Click Yes to accept the User Account Control security warning that may appear.
Click the Fix button and wait. When finished it will open a log (fixlog.txt).
Please post the content of that log in your next reply.

Please let me know if anything is unclear.

Hello deejay.

Thank you for the logs. I'm glad to hear that your computer is running well and you could perform the updates on CCleaner. I can say that your computer appears to be clean and free of malware.

However there are a few errors shown in the Addition.txt log including one indicating the Windows Search Service potentially has a corrupted index catalog.

I suggest printing out each set of instructions or copy them to a Notepad file and reading the entire post before proceeding. It will make following them easier.

Now please proceed as follow:

Fist you need to make a backup of the Registry.

To backup your Registry
First of all create a new folder on the computer's Desktop and give it a name you will remember such as Registry backup.

  • Click Start
  • Type Regedit
  • Press Enter

A new window will open.

  • To back up the entire Registry locate the word 'Computer' by scrolling to the very top of the left side of the Registry (where all the "folders" are) and click/tap on it.
  • Click File
  • Click Export
  • Choose a location to save the Registry backup file to (inside the folder 'Registry backup' that you previously created in your computer's Desktop);
  • In the 'File name' text field, enter a name for the backup file. Anything is fine since you can easily remember;
    Click on the Save button.

Next, please proceed with a Registry fix to reset the search index back to default value.

Registry Fix:

  • Right-click Start > select Run > type notepad > click OK and accept the UAC security warning that may appear;
  • Copy and Paste the following text inside the code box below (starting with the first line Windows Registry....) to Notepad.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search]
    "SetupCompletedSuccessfully"=-

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search]
    "SetupCompletedSuccessfully"="0"

  • Make sure there are no blank spaces before the first line (Windows Registry....) and there should be one blank line at the end.
  • Click File at the top and then choose Save As.
  • Change Save As Type to All Files.
  • Name it fix.reg and save it on your Desktop.
  • Right-click fix.reg and select Run as administrator.
  • Click Yes to accept any security warning that may appear.
  • It will ask you if you want to merge it to the Registry, click Yes.

Restart the computer.

Next,

Follow the instructions below to run a System File Checker scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;

  • Click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator;
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Please attach that file in your next reply for my review.

Next,

Go to Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System

On the left menu click on 'Device Manager'.

Check and see if there is any yellow exclamation point next to a device.

If so, try to update the driver for that device:
Right click on the hardware's name or icon, choose Properties, then the Driver tab, followed by the Update Driver button.
The Update Driver Software wizard will begin, which we'll completely step through to finish the driver update for that piece of hardware.

In your reply please attach the cbs.txt file and let me know how is the computer running at this point.

Hi Android,

I have an issue with your instructions and want to clarify them before I proceed so i do not mess things up. When I do the following,

  • Name it fix.reg and save it on your Desktop.
  • Right-click fix.reg and select Run as administrator.
  • Click Yes to accept any security warning that may appear.
  • It will ask you if you want to merge it to the Registry, click Yes.

I right click but there is nothing asking me to run as administrator, I open it and it says,  MERGE then EDIT then Print etc... If I click on MERGE, a warning box opens saying:

Adding information can unintentionally change or delete values and cause components to stop working correctly. If you do not trust the source of this information in C:\Users\Dennis]Desktop\fix.reg, do not add it to the registry.

Are you sure you want to continue?

Please let me know how to proceed. Thank you..

Hello.

Okay, I will assume that you have already created and saved the fix.reg file in your computer's Desktop.

Please do the following:

Double-click on the fix.reg icon.

It will ask you if you want to merge it to the Registry and if you want to continue.

Please accept it.

Restart the computer and proceed with the next instructions of my previous post.

Please let me know if anything is unclear.

Thank you.

Following are the results I got from that site, I tried it two different ways, but I am not sure I did it correctly. Sorry, but some of these things are a bit confusing to me. Thank you for your patience and assistance..

http://s000.tinyuplo...518475582296290

File upload finished

  Status: 950881 bytes from 950881 uploaded (speed: 0 kbps)
Remaining time: 00:00:00
Elapsed time: 00:00:03 Close

By the way, when I used Tiny Upload, as I clicked on the window to upload, a second window tried to open and my AVG blocked it and said there was a virus blocked, it was:

Virus found XPL/Def.DM.1750_13

Just thought I would let you know about that.

Hello deejay.

Thank you for the link.

The cbs.txt file shows many errors in the System files that have been fixed.

To make sure about the complete integrity of the System files, please run SFC again and post the message that is returned after it finished.

Follow the instructions below to run a new SFC scan on your system:

  • Click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow"

  • Let the scan run until the end (100%), then copy/paste in your next reply the message that is returned after.

Your next reply should contain the message returned on completion of the SFC scan.

How is your computer running?

Hi.

These are good news.

Now, outdated programs contains security vulnerabilities that are exploited by malware in order to infect the computer without the user's knowledge. Usually this is one of the ways that more contributes to infect computers with malware.

Run a program like Personal Software Inspector (PSI) or FileHippo Update Checker to see what programs need to be updated.

Next, let's delete the tools we used. If any tool or log remain you can manually delete it. The DelFix tool will remove all the tools and then will delete itself.

Follow the instructions below to download and execute DelFix.

  • Download DelFix and move the executable to your Desktop;
  • Right-click on DelFix.exe and select Run as Administrator;
  • Check the following options :
    • Activate UAC (This option will activate the User Account Control feature).
    • Remove disinfection tools (this option will remove the tools used in the cleaning process).
    • Create registry backup (this option will create a backup from the Windows Registry).
    • Purge system restore (this option will remove all previous and possibly infected restore points, and will create a new and clean restore point of your system).
    • Reset system settings (this option will reset any system settings back to default that were changed either by us during cleansing or by malware infection).
  • Once the options mentioned above are checked, click on Run;
  • After DelFix is done running, a log will open. Please copy and paste the entire content of the output log in your next reply;

Are there any issues or concerns with the computer at this point?

Following is the log you requested. Everything seems to be running good with the exception of occasional Not Responding when some programs are running. An example would be when I was updating programs using Delfix just now, I clicked to update Skype,  but received the Not Responding issue. I also noticed when I leave my computer for any length of time with Firefox open, my computer freezes and I have to hold the on button until it shuts down and reboots, that happened once yesterday and once today. Other than that, it is definitely running better and opens new windows much faster than prior to this cleanup. I greatly appreciate all of your valuable time and assistance.

Hello deejay.

You're very welcome.

I would like to check what is causing those freezes and 'Not Responding' issues.

Please clear the cache and cookies and reset Firefox.

Clear the cache, cookies and history of Firefox:
https://kb.wisc.edu/...ge.php?id=17504

Reset Firefox settings to default:
https://support.mozi...es-fix-problems

Next, I would like to see how are the System Services working.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner by Farbar to your Desktop and double-click the file to run it.

  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center / Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Are you still having the 'Not Responding' issue and the freezes when Firefox is open?

HI, I cleared my history etc per your instructions, also reset Firefox and then I downloaded Fixreg per your link but when I tried to run it, a box opened with the following message:

Registry Editor

Adding information can unintentionally change or delete values and cause components to stop working correctly. If you do not trust the source of this information in c:\Users\Dennis\Desktop\Fixreg, do not add it to the registry.

Are you sure you wish to continue?

I clicked yes and then another box opened with the following message:

The keys and values contained in c:\Users\Dennis\Desktop\Fixreg have been successfully added to the registry.

At no point did it ask me to run any kind of scan.

Thank you again for all of your time and valuable assistance.

You just repeated the Registry fix that you supposed done on post #9 with the instructions provided in post #8. The Registry fix does not provide a scan. The purpose was resetting the Search Index of your System that for some reason was corrupt.

You didn't need to have it run again.

In my previous post I asked you to download, install and run a scan with Farbar Service Scanner. Can you please do it now and post its log for my review?

Please tell me if you are still having the 'Not Responding' issue and the freezes when Firefox is open.

Thank you.

Hello deejay.

Just donated $50.00, I wish I could afford much more. Thanks again.

You are very welcome and we thank you for your donation. :hi:

We are glad in solving your computer problem.

You can delete the Farbar Service Scanner tool and the logs it produced.

To help keep malware off your system below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please consider using these ideas to help secure your computer.

Keep your Windows Operating System and Antivirus program up-to-date.

Please note: Many installer offer third-party downloads that are installed automatically when you do not uncheck certain check-boxes. While most of the time not being malicious you usually do not want these on your computer. Be careful during the installation process and you will avoid seeing tons of new unwanted toolbars in your favorite web browser.

Please consider installing and running some of the following programs; they are either free or have free versions of commercial programs:
Keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) update and perform a regular scan to your system as it will make it harder for malware to reside on your computer.
A tutorial on using MBAM can be found here and a complete guide here

Please Note: Only the paid for version has real time capabilities.
A free non-resident utility to prevent the installation of ActiveX-based malware is JavaCool's SpywareBlaster, available here

Please keep these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems. A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors, like SpywareBlaster can be run with any of them.

Note that there are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure.

A similar category of programs is now called "scareware." Scareware programs are active infections that will pop-up on your computer and tell you that you are infected. If you look closely, it will usually have a name that looks like it might be legitimate, but it is NOT one of the programs you installed. It tells you to click and install it right away. If you click on any part of it, including the 'X' to close it, you may actually help it infect your computer further. Keeping protection updated and running resident protection can help prevent these infections. If it happens anyway, get offline as quickly as you can. Pull the internet connection cable or shut down the computer if you have to. Contact someone to help by using another computer if possible. These programs are also sometimes called 'rogues', but they are different than the older version of rogues mentioned above.

Another most feared threat at the moment is an infection by a Ransomware. A Ransomware infection is a program that ransoms the data or functionality of your computer until you perform an action. This action is typically to pay a ransom in the form of Bitcoins or another payment method. I advise you to read more info on this terrible threat here and here.

Be careful with flash drives, as they can spread infections. See this post on USB/flash drive safety.

Stay away from P2P software; even with a clean P2P program, their networks are often riddled with malware.

Don't click on attachments or links in e-mail, and read your e-mail in text-only mode for the highest safety.

Don't click on links received in instant message programs.

A HOSTS file will prevent Internet Explorer from communicating with sites known to be associated with adware or spyware. A good regularly updated HOST file is MVPS HOSTS File, available here

For much more useful and complete information, please read the following links to fully understand PC Security and Best Practices:

Hopefully these steps will help to keep you error and malware free. If you run into more difficulty, we will certainly do what we can to help.

Happy surfing and stay safe. :thumbup:
