I have run adaware and spybot, and made a visit to HouseCall. Housecall found 14 infected files but could not clean them (in use). I don't have any AV program running. After i get this mess cleaned up, can you recommend a good AV? Thanks a ton for your help, here's my hijackthis log:

Although I am not familiar with how webshots runs, I would say that having it running multiple times as it is in your log is not good.
Might want to try rebooting then check to see if there are that many instances again. If anything I would uninstall it and re-install it.

Also, go into the control panel and Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Incredifind and/or Incredimail. These are bad items to have installed on your system. Also the Google Toolbar could be conflicting with Incredifind. Google's Toolbar is fine to have on your system, but generaly you do not want more than one toolbar running at any time. I personaly would not use anyone elses toolbar but googles.

Once you have done the above, post a new log.

Hi Orumph. Just stepping in here for a minute, hope you don't mind.

dconlon, You have the peper trojan. Download the following. When running it be sure to let it have internet access through any software firewalls you may have.

Use the uninstall tool - download from:

http://www.memorywat....com/uninst.exe

Double click on uninst.exe, let it run and terminate.

run it again for good measure.
When done post a new log.. There may be more to clean.....

Yes, the Peper uninstall seems to have worked. You no longer have this one:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [25KD8LX3KXST#7] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Szep85lm.exe

You do still have P2P and IncrediFind installed - Add/Remove uninstall didn't work?
Uninstall would be best way to get rid of them, as Orumph recommended.

You have quite a bit of spyware.
Please get Spybot S&D to clear out some of it.
http://security.koll...n&page=download
Download, install, and run.
Fix everything SpybotSD labels in red.

Let it run again after reboot if it needs to.
Then post another HijackThis log.

I downloaded Spybot 1.3 (i had been running 1.2), it spotted lots of stuff, but when i tried to remove the selected items it stopped running - i had to cancel using ctl-alt-delete task list. I rebooted, reran it, and checked only one item and it did the same thing. I could not uninstall Intelimail or the other program mentioned above, because they are not on the add/remove program list.

Heres a new hijackthis log: Thanks again for all your help.

Fix the following with HJT.,..

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R3 - URLSearchHook: IncrediFindBHO Class - {4FC95EDD-4796-4966-9049-29649C80111D} - C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~1\BHO\INCFIN~2.DLL

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Do you know what this is,,,,
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ANT.EXE

I'm not sure what this is,, will need more research. Not sure if this is peper or not.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wvjzzxpn] C:\WINDOWS\hhsuhzen.exe

Get CWshredder from my sig and run it. Then post a new log. I won't be getting back to this tonight. Probably mid day tomorrow if I get a chance. I will check tomorrow evening though for sure.

Do you deliberately have PurityScan installed?
http://www.answersth.../tasklist_i.htm
says it is a scam and downright dangerous.

If you don't want it then also fix this:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Dcas] C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\oses.exe

These also should be fixed:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wvjzzxpn] C:\WINDOWS\hhsuhzen.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ANT] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ANT.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Pcsv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\pcsvc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dpi] C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\DPI\DPI.EXE

After fix and reboot, delete these whole folders:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\DPI\

See http://www.pestpatro...edia_viewer.asp for info about the DelFin Media Viewer

Thanks again for all the attention you've given to this - I appreciate it. I have to work tomorrow, so I'm packin' it in too; I'll check in again tomorrow night. Thanks!

I ran CWShredder, it asked if a file name appeared random and i answered no because the file name C:\Windows\Winfavorites.exe, which looked pretty legit to me - it comes up as a virus when i run housecall, but non-deleteable, so I reran CWshredder and deleted it.

I'm not sure about ANT but it also comes up on the list of files detected by HouseCall, which says: TROJ STILEN A in C:\Windows\Temp\ANt.exe

Hi,

cnm asked me to step in because this she is too busy to continue right now.... You still have a lot of the malware showing up here, so lets see if we can kill it...

Please print this out to follow and then reboot to Safe Mode and run HJT. Choose to scan and then mark/fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wvjzzxpn] C:\WINDOWS\hhsuhzen.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ANT] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ANT.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Pcsv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\pcsvc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dpi] C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\DPI\DPI.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Dcas] C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\oses.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WNSI] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wnscpsu.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ClockSync] C:\PROGRA~1\CLOCKS~1\Sync.exe /q

Then please close HJT and find and remove these... You will probably need to set WinME to show all hidden files... Delete the folders the files are in (in bold).

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ANT.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PCS\PCSVC.EXE
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\DPI\DPI.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\APPLICATION DATA\OSES.EXE

It would be a good idea to clear all temp files on your computer at this point. Use IE to clear all cookies (which means you will have to log back into sites like this). In Tools, Options....

If this doesn't clear it out, we can try other means, but lets go with this first. After you finish, reboot and post a fresh log... I have to get some sleep too, so I won't get back to you until after work tomorrow....

I rebooted in safe mode, deleted the checked items, and deleted everything from the Temp folder. So far so good. How's it look now?

Can you recommend a good AV program?

Hopefully this is just a little leftover and we don't have to dig deeper to kill this thing, but please run HJT again and mark/fix:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Dcas] C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\oses.exe

After you do this, please reboot and post another HJT log so we can make sure none of the garbage came back....

As for an antivirus... the two best free options are AVG and Avast. You can get AVG from the link in my links below. You also need a good software firewall and spyware protection programs like SpywareBlaster, IE-Spyads and SpywareGuard. A lot of people use all 3 and they work well together without taking a lot of resources. There are some firewall links below as well. Sygate and ZoneAlarm are considered the easiest to use of the free ones and Kerio the best, but harder to work with.... Also, please read the article in my links: "How did I get infected"....

I downloaded SpywareBlaster and AVG 6.0 and followed all instructions. I changed IE settings to increase security. I thought things were going pretty well until i tried to run HJT to send you one final log - now I can't run HJT ! ! ! I tried downloading a fresh copy, but that didn't work either. I'm losing it. Where do we go from here?

Thanks again. . . .

What happened when you tried to run HJT?? If it seems to have disappeared, please run Spybot and CWShredder to see if they will open, you don't have to actually run them, but if they won't open you have picked up a real nasty customer. If you can still open them and still see them, it is probably something much less nasty and I just need more info about what is happening....

This is still here... did you try to remove it in HJT again?? If so, please boot into Safe Mode and see if you can kill it... If not we will have to get out the heavy artillery....

Thanks a million for all your help. You were unbelievably helpful!

Yep, it looks clean, so now you get my standard speech for keeping it that way...

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them.... :D :D

Helpful link: SpywareBlaster...
