I followed the instructions by bleepingcomputer but the site for CoolWebSearch.Smartkiller (v1/v2) Miniremoval Tool is not working. CW Shredder is not working correctly and I ned the Miniremoval Tool to excise the Shredder. I know that PepiMK is the author of the Tool but the site no longer lists it.

Thanks

FWIW, having the EXACT same problem here.

I posted a thread on this last night but no replies as of yet.

I'm not sure (expertise is minimal) but I think certain strains of this about:blank virus disable such things as downloads to spyware software, notepad, and adobe reader.

Like I said in my post...these jerks are good.

Anyone else having this same problem?

Hello Troman:

Screw it. Clean up the IE browser so you can download Mozilla Firefox browser. That's what I did. Use the latest AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ (download and update), use the latest Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-net...rors/index.html (download and update), use the latest Spyware Guard http://www.javacools...ywareguard.html (download and update), use CW Shredder (if you cannot ftp this from blocked sites due to sinister coding from Cool Web Search hackers let me know and I will send it to you one way or another) to clean up what remains and then launch IE to run like Hell for the Mozilla browser. Do not reboot if you have XP because the Restore function will attempt to communicate with all applications and subvert, unintentionally, your goal. Spyware Guard may alert you several times that your search page and home page are attempting to be changed by the scumware Cool Web Search applet. Revert to the original when you are asked by Spyware Guard. Pay attention to what Spyware Guard is asking of you, do not go to About:Blank for home page, do not go to a Local setting for search page, leave it blank (not capitalized About:Blank).

Download Mozilla Firefox http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

Mozilla Firefox is cool. Very intuitive. It will even automatically port (at your affirmation) all the IE settings such as Internet connections, configurations, and even the Favorites (which will now be known as the original term of Bookmarks) from the junky, klunky Internet Explorer.

Enjoy. Let me know if I can help.

Regards,

Micheal

Micheal,

Thank you for your response and advice. It it greatly appreciated.

I researched FireFox upon your advice and I will DEFINITELY use it in the future.

Problem for right now is my computer is suffering from so many symptoms that I still need a professionals help (I'm willing to pay for competent advice).

Here are my symptoms in case anyone thinks they can help:

rid myself of the about:blank reloader in Win98 as per BobO's instructions

BUT

homepage still reverts to this funky url - http://%68%6F%6D%65%70%61%67%65%2E%63%6F%6D%00@%77%77%77%2e%65%2d%66%69%6e%64%65%72%2e%63%63/%68%70/

computer hangs and ctrl, alt, del - end task - button is practically worn out!

can't download most spyware removal tools and utilities (as we've already discussed)

Acrobat Reader seems disabled

AND THE MOST SCARY OF ALL - notepad has been hijacked and seems to be attempting to communicate to an IP address 44-45-53-54-00-00 (whatever that means)

If you think it is still safe/wise to just go ahead and trash IE in favor of FireFox in light of all these problems (particularly the notepad thing & the general computer lackluster navigation), then by all means, I WILL FOR SURE!

Thanks to you and everyone here for their good samaritan help!

Hello Troman:

Can you accomplish any of the tasks that I suggested? Please be specific, as you obviously have, so far.

Regards,

Micheal

By the way, 44-45-53-54-00-00 is not an IP address. It would seem to be a MAC address. As in Netmon http://www.nat32.com/htm/netmon.htm And your "funky URL" is a HKEY Registry input http://vil.nai.com/v...Print125664.htm.

When in doubt always Google your queries. You will be amazed what 100,000 low end servers can do for you.

Regards,

Micheal
