Worked on this for several days but can't seem to clean up this infection. Used ad aware, spybot, hijackthis, spyhunter and CWShredder and added DSO stop2 to plug the IE vunerability which I cannot run critical updates for right now. Some of these tools found and removed infections but still have the homepage redirect. I considered reformating hard disk and reloadiong WindowsME but I'd like to take one more shot to see if someone can help. Been looking at the posts here but have not found one that runs WIndows ME and has the same problem. This is really a malicious, persistant infection. Thanks to anyone that can help solve this.

My current Hijackthis scan:

I think I cracked it! The bad file was System32.dll and another called shimgvwr.dll in the C:\windows\system32 directory. I made a quarrantine file and put those 2 files under it. Cleaned up register references to the jksearch.bz website, cleaned up the internet options homepage address and rebooted.
I'm not sure what help it was but Ad Aware, SpyBot and Hijack this found a few other files like Services.exe Svchost.exe and cleaned them. Note that this (at least my problem) was not a Cool Web Search infection. I used CWS throughout the process and came up negative.
The best clue was that I knew the day and approximate time I became infected. An advanced seach using the windows searh tool for files created on that day and time gave me a list of suspect files. I looked at the files and started eliminating them one by one. The last 2, System32.dll and shimgvwr.dll were the most difficult to find. A tool from this forum helped to put me on to the System 32 file. It's called Stardreck; I found it on one of the posts in the Malware section in this forum. I used Stardeck to disable System32.dll and found that I could change the home page without haveing it change back immediately and not until I rebooted. After that I quaranteened it and the other and came up clean every time.
I'm a novice at this with enough knowlege to be dangerous. This forum provided me with some tools and clues that helped immensely. Thanks to all who use this site and post thinks to help others like me. I hope some of my experience makes sense and helps some of the experts on this page come up with a more professional approach.

Here's my cleaned up Hijackthis file. If anyone sees something I should be concerned about I would appreciate a post telling me so.

I must commend you - Excellent discovery on the cause :)

I'll post the full response for that particular bug for you as you may want to make sure your registry is cleaned up as well...

Please copy the contents of the quote box to notepad:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad]
"System"=-
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{061646A1-DC57-487D-B023-A938198C174E}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4E8A9E72-8942-40EF-88DF-A559152F6B41}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6E94CEC3-0C84-4310-AE20-CD4090178388}]

Hit save as and give it the name clear.reg under the filename set file types to all files. Save it to the desktop. After done double click the clear.reg when asked to merge say yes and reboot.

Find this file system32.dll which is probably in either:
  • c:\windows\system32\system32.dll
  • c:\windows\system\system32.dll
... and delete it.

Then fix these with hijackthis:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://jksearch.biz/redir.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://jksearch.biz/redir.php
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://jksearch.biz/redir.php
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://jksearch.biz/redir.php
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://jksearch.biz/redir.php
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://jksearch.biz/redir.php

Othere than that your system is clean - A small suggestion - I often recommend deleting all O16 entries - Speeds things up a bit and it does no harm. If the files are needed, they will simply get downloaded the next time you connect to the relevant site.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.
