      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.   EDIT: I have asked our hosting service to do the restore at 9 PM Central time and it looks like it will go forward at that time.  Please prepare whatever you need to prepare so that we can restore your topics when the forum is stable again.

Please copy the contents of the quote box to notepad:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad]

"System"=-

Hit save as and give it the name clear.reg under the filename set file types to all files. Save it to the desktop. After done double click the clear.reg when asked to merge say yes and reboot.

Find this file system32.dll which is probably in either:

  • c:\windows\system32\system32.dll
  • c:\windows\system\system32.dll

... and delete it.

Then fix these with hijackthis:

How to Remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder <= Please click on this link for instructions on how to download and use CoolWebSearch Shredder which will help remove a CWS infection on your computer. Make sure you close all programs and windows before running it and be sure to click on the "Fix" button.

Fix the following in HijackThis if they are still present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [services Process] C:\WINNT\system32\config\services.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [soundmx] \soundmx.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TLGOGCDGXUS] C:\WINNT\PYQYDXYKNT.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [runwin32] C:\WINNT\runwin32.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wininet32] C:\WINNT\wininet32.exe

The following are resource hogs and are optional to delete:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?

Please cleanup temporary files etc. Browse to and select all contents in the following folders (Windows may be WINNT or WIN98 etc.), and delete (Make sure to delete the sub-folders, but not the Temp folders themselves!):

  • C:\Windows\Temp (all contents)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files (all contents) <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp (all contents)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files [/color](all contents)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp (all contents)
  • Empty your "Recycle Bin".
  • C:\WINNT\system32\config\services.exe <= Please note the location - Imperative that you do not delete the wrong one
  • soundmx.exe
  • C:\WINNT\PYQYDXYKNT.exe
  • C:\WINNT\runwin32.exe
  • C:\WINNT\wininet32.exe

Reboot again and log in normally.

Please go to Microsoft Windows Update and download all critical updates for your system. This is imperative. I would strongly recommend upgrading to IE 6 with all security updates and be sure to get Windows 2000 SP4.

Repost a new HijackThis log into this message for further review.

PGPhantom:

Thanks _very much_, I think that got nearly everything.

Some notes:

I did not find 04 - HKLM\. .\Run: [soundmx] \soundmx.exe in HJT scan.

I already had, and performed a CoolWebShredder scan & disinfection, but no harm to re-do.

My machine runs NT, so no Safe Mode, but I did the various file deletes. I also found a desktop shortcut and hijacker to a casino site that was lurking in C:\WINNT (and deleted it, too).

I did not findC:\WINNT\...?...soundmx.exe in that directory or its sub-directories.

Also did not find C:\WINNT|PYQYDXYKNT.exe; \runwin32.exe; or \wininet32.exe

I will check and get latest system updates. Currently have SP 3, IE 5.50.4134.0600

The log is looking good :D

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

Yes, sorry, I did all that, too (temp file deletion). I'll see how much of the other installs I can do also. I may have to wait until Monday to go get the Service Pack and IE updates - -I have a 9 year old going to a baseball game and Cub Scout campout, so I have to go early!

THANKS AGAIN for all the help! I had done some logging on the site when I first had a problem last year, but couldn't re-create my user name, so had to re-up my registration. I've been able to fix stuff myself up til now... Have a good weekend!
