Hi, thanks for taking a look.

A few days ago I noticed my computer running a little slow, then it froze. I turned it off, turned it back on, then did Shut Down Computer restart. Once I'd done that, I opened IE and as usual used the drop down of the address bar to navigate to fark.com. I looked at a few sites (which open in a new window, which I close after viewing), then when I clicked the next link, IE just closed rather than open a new window with the link.

I ran HijackThis just to see if I saw anything screwy, and saw two entries from BroadcastPC, I think both had the letters "tv" in them. I checked and deleted them.

I ran AdAware 6 which showed a few files from BroadcastPC, most of which also contained the letters "tv" (tvm.exe, etc.) I did the usual "select all" then "next" and learned I'd have to reboot and let AdAware run at startup to get three of the offending items removed. I did so, and AdAware seemed happy.

Next I ran Spybot S&D, which found two items called CleverEHooker.jeired. Fixed those. Out of habit, I rebooted and things seemed fine, until:

I opened IE, went to click the address bar dropdown, and nothing happened. Next, I went to type "fark.com" and it appeared as usual, with every other URL I've visited with "fa" as the first two letters. I then clicked the address bar dropdown again and figured out that the only item on that list now was fark.com....make sense? Kind of a bummer to have to rebuild that collection of sites I visit all the time, but not a huge problem.

A couple days later I had the same problem with the same results, and fixed it the same way.

However, later I went to open Notepad and got an alert box saying something about "the path to 00003140.exe does not exist." The usual Notepad icon had been replaced by a MS-typical window-with-a-blue-bar-at-the-top-and-an-arrow-in-the-lower-left. In checking again while writing this, I got the same alert box, which then redirected to My Documents; Notepad simultaneously disappeared from the Start menu. Now, if I go Start/Programs/Accessories/Notepad, I go straight to My Documents. If I double-click a Notepad document, it says "Windows cannot find NOTEPAD.EXE." However, if I do a View/Source, that opens in Notepad.....as did my HijackThis log.

From what I've read, it seems that maybe I have/had a trojan or virus, but none of the methods for ridding my computer of it seem to contain any files or registry-related items that I can find on my machine. It also seems I may need to get another copy of the Notepad exe.

Below is my latest HijackThis log, though I don't see anything screwy contained in it:

I might add that looking at my Norton logs shows me that a recent scan detected and deleted something called Trojan.ByteVerify.

Anyway, some kind of lower-right-hand-corner pop-thing keeps appearing about one time about five days after I get rid of everything sketchy--a fake toolbar. It freezes my computer, and annoys me. I surf minimal pr0n, and "safe" link sites like Fark.

Plus my Notepad is still hijacked.

Anyone?
