      IE 11 copy/paste problem

      It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

Help to get rid of CoolWWW

2 posts in this topic

Yes, I have read the FAQ.

PROBLEM: When I start AOL (no jokes please) the start-up splash screen immediately closes by itself (which is not normal), then if type in a URL when that browser window starts to open, it too automatically closes. Therefore, I can't do anything, or go anywhere on the internet.

WHAT I DO: When I run Spy Sweeper it detects CoolWWW. It says: "Detected running software: CoolWWW - msvsres.dll" then, I select delete and it says: "Deleted CoolWWW trace C:\Windows\System32\msvsres.dll" when it does that, all my icons disappear for a second, all open windows, program, browsers, etc, are automatically closed. I then have to re-logon to AOL and it seems to work fine, however, my system tray in the lower right-hand corner of my screen is empty as well. Upon reboot, the same problem occurs again.

I have run Hijackthis, here is the log.

Looks like there are quite a few pests on your system. (Unnecessary toolbars) Have you updated Spysweeper to version 3.0? And, also, I recommend that you download CWShredder at http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn

(Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware are handy also.)

Troj/Urbin-A is a Trojan that sets the following registry entry so as to run itself on system startup:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\

AppInit_DLLs = "msvsres.dll"

Whenever the infected computer attempts to make internet connections,

Troj/Urbin-A attempts to connect to a remote machine and may redirect the infected computer to different site.

If CWShredder does not fix the prob., you can manually remove the trojan from the registry. Always be careful when editing the registry![before you edit, you can make a backup. On the 'Registry' menu, click 'Export Registry File'. In the 'Export range' panel, click 'All', then save your registry as Backup. (Or, set a system restore point.)]

Edit at your own risk. Here's how:

At the taskbar, click Start|Run. Type 'Regedit' and press Return. The registry editor opens.

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE entry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\

AppInit_DLLs = "msvsres.dll"

and remove the reference to "msvsres.dll".

Close the registry editor.

Re-scan your system with your anti-virus software and spyware/adware removal tools. That should do it. I hope this helps you.
