OK, I see there are gobs of people with this problem, but I haven't been able to lick it based on the resolutions posted.

I've read the FAQs, help files and pinned threads. I downloaded and ran AdAware, Spybot S&D and CWShredder. All latest versions/updates. I've tried it in Safe Mode. Deleted all the Temp files and Temp Internet files for all users.

It keeps trying to come back & Spyware Guard is keeping it at bay, but I still have it residing somewhere on my machine because SG keeps popping up over and over and over again. I know the sp.html is a bad thing. I try to get rid of it, but it keeps returning like a divorced wife <LOL>. I'm just fed up and await your trusted assistance. I will not reboot until instructed to do so.

Here's my HJT log:

To fix About:Blank problems:
  • Please download About:Buster from one of the following locations:
  • Please close all windows.
  • Unzip AboutBuster.zip and doubleclick the exe.
  • Next click ok and allow the program to run. (it may take a few minutes)
  • Make a copy of the log it creates for posting later.
  • Then run the About:Buster a second time just to be sure it got everything.
  • Make a copy of the log it creates again.
  • Reboot and post the 2 about buster logs and a fresh HijackThis log.

Try this instead - It is done in safe mode ...
  • Please download About:Buster from any of the following locations:
  • Boot into safe mode. How do I boot into "Safe" mode?
  • Unzip the downloaded about:buster program to your desktop.
  • Double click it and hit "Ok".
  • Click "Start".
  • Select "Ok" to start the scan.
  • The scan should take a few seconds.
  • Once it is done save the report.
  • Reboot and sign in as you normally do and repeat the procedure for running about:buster.
  • Post the results of the report and a fresh HijackThis log for review.

Just to clarify:

Do you want me to download About:Buster again? Do I have an old version???

I extracted the .exe file to it's own folder on my C: drive. Is it any better extracted to the desktop?

The rest is clear.

Also - Is the Backdoor.Trojan I now have going to get in the way?

Thanks.

Download, install and then run http://www.trojanhunter.com]Trojan Hunter[/URL]

After that, please follow the instructions as details. About:Buster gets updated frequently. Even if you have the latest version, ther is no harm downloading it again.

OK. Downloaded and extracted Trojanhunter.

Booted to Safe mode & ran TH and AB. TH reported no Trojans found. AB scan shown below.

I also cleaned out all the Temp and Temporary Internet Files for all users.

Rebooted normally & ran TH and AB again. Again TH reported no Trojans. Ran AB again, then HJT. Results below.

NAV is still giving me an alert for Backdoor.Trojan. When I click the hyperlink in the NAV Virus Alert box, it takes me here: http://securityrespo...oor.trojan.html

I've tried the method/steps outlined there to no avail.

As much as I hate to format & reinstall Windows, looks like that's where I'm headed.....

(BTW - I really do appreciate the help!)

If it helps any, here are the AB & HJT results:

In Safe Mode:

NAV is still giving me an alert for Backdoor.Trojan.
I've tried the method/steps outlined there to no avail.

As much as I hate to format & reinstall Windows, looks like that's where I'm headed..

Pity it came to that... :scratchhead:
Unfortunately the steps outlined above and in this entire thread
would not fix the problem and it's a rather known issue!

See here:
http://forums.spywar...topic=18145&hl=
http://forums.spywar...topic=18104&hl=

*Do not attempt to follow these steps on your own!
If you're still around, post back details first ... And I'll
take it from there...

I'm still here.

Yup. The two threads you referenced sure seem to be my problem as well.

I won't try anything until I hear beack from you. This has gotten so silly. I just turn on my PC to see what has been posted here, type a response then shut it down.

Any help would be appreciated.

Once I get all this garbage cleaned out, It's time for a new full back-up, then format & reinstall. In addition to all the additional programs I've had to install to try and cure these problems to the regular junk that accumilates in general...

Time to dedicate a weekend of cleaning up. I just don't want to run any back-ups until the Virus and Malware issues are resolved.

Again - Thanks. I Look forward to your response.

No probs :)

Let's start over.

FIRST, Disable Norton'active protection completely!

Next,
Download and install : "FINDnFIX.exe" from any of
the links in my signature.

Run the "!LOG!.bat" file, wait for the final output (log.txt)
post the results....

The list will produce a small database of files that will match certain criteria.
You must know how to ID the file based on the filters provided in
the scan, as not all the files flagged are bad.
Ex: read only files, s/h files, last modified date. size, etc.
The filters provided should help narrow down the list, and hopefully
pinpoint the culprit.
Along with that, registry scan logged at the end should match the
corresponding file(s) listed.
╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗
Unless the file match the entire criteria, it should not be pointed to remove
without attempting to confirm it's nature!
╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗
At times there could be several (legit) files flagged, and/or duplicate culprit file(s)!
If in doubt, always search the file(s) and properties according to criteria!

The file(s) found should be moved to \FINDnFIX\"junkxxx" Subfolder

This will take couple or more steps to fix. Be sure to Follow the next set of steps carefully, in the exact order specified:
  • Get ready to restart your computer.
  • Open the "FINDnFIX\Keys1" Subfolder!
  • Double Click on the "FIX.bat" file and you will get a prompt preparing for auto-restart in 10 seconds.
  • Allow your computer to restart.
  • After the reboot, go to "Start" => "Search" and find "SQLNFM.DLL" (This should be a visible file in the %WINDIR%\system32 folder).
  • Right click on the file and select "Cut".
  • Immediately open C:\FINDnFIX\junkxxx.
  • Right click in this folder and select "Paste" from the menu.
  • If prompted about moving a read only file, just press "OK".
  • Verify that the offending .dll file is now in this directory. e.g. C:\FINDnFIX\junkxxx\SQLNFM.DLL.
  • Go back one level to C:\FINDnFIX and double click on the "RESTORE.bat" file to run it.
  • A new log will be generated (log2.txt) - Please post it here.
  • Note:
  • Do not change/move around or tamper with any of the file(s) folder(s) and path included in the 'FINDnFIX' folder.

Would you like the good news or the bas news first ??

Good news - The log is clean :)

Bad, new - Not quite done yet ...
Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Run Ad-Aware with the latest update.
    • Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from here.
    • After installing Ad-aware, and before running the program, Please be sure to update the reference file as per these instructions.
    • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
      • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
      • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
      • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives" (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
      • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
      • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
      • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
      • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
      • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol) and select the following:
        • "Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile"
        • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
        • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
        • "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
      • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
      • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
      • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
      • Select "Activate in-Depth scan".
    • Close all programs except ad-aware.
    • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
    • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
    • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
  • Download the latest version of Spybot from either:
    • Install spybot and by default is should install into C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy.
    • Run Spybot by clicking on "Start" => "Programs" => "Spybot - Search & Destroy" => "Spybot - Search & Destroy".
    • The first time you run it, allow it to create a backup of your registry when prompted. This will take a few minutes to complete.
    • Click on "Search for Updates".
    • If any updates are found, place a check mark next to each and click on "Download Updates".
    • Click on "Immunize" and once it detect what has or has not been blocked, block all remaining items by clicking on the green plus sign next to immunize at the top.
    • Click on "Search & Destroy" => "Check for Problems".
    • If any problems are found, be sure to click on "Fix Selected Problems".

AMEN!!

"and there was much rejoicing" - Monty Python and the Holy Grail

I currently have SpywareGuard, AdAware, SpybotS&D and Google Toolbar. I also have TrojanHunter. I would have hoped that would be enough. The IE/Spyad looks like a good one though. I'll probably add that to the arsenal.

How much of a resourse hog are these? Oh never mind. It can't be that bad and it's worth the protection.

Well, I'll run AdAware & Spybot S&D (per your directions) tonight after making sure I have the latest versions and definitions/updates.

If everything comes up roses, I think I'll be making that donation to this site. As long as this took and as much frustration this has caused, my only other option would have been to wipe my drives clean and start with a clean Windows install. That is something I detest doing.

Thank you very much for all your help. If you're ever in Las Vegas, be sure to look me up. The beer is on me!
