      IE 11 copy/paste problem

It has come to our attention that people using Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) are having trouble with copy/paste to the forum. If you encounter this problem, using a different browser like Firefox or Chrome seems to get around the problem. We do not know what the problem is, but it seems to be specific to IE 11 and we are hopeful that Microsoft will eventually fix it.

PLEASE READ - Reversing upgrade   02/23/2017

We have found that this new upgrade is somewhat of a disaster.  We are finding lots of glitches in being able to post and administer the forum.  Additionally, there are new costs associated with the upgrade that we simply cannot afford.  As a result, we have decided to reverse course and go back to the previous version of our software.  Since this will involve restoring it from a backup, we will lose posts that have been added since January 30 or possibly even some before that.    If you started a topic during that time, we urge you to make backups of your posts and you will need to start the topics over again after the change.  You can simply paste the copies of your posts that you created at that point.    If you joined the forum this month, you will need to re-register since your membership will be lost along with the posts.  Since you have a concealed password, we cannot simply restore your membership for you.   We are going to backup as much as we can so that it will reduce inconvenience for our members.  Unfortunately we cannot back everything up since much will be incompatible with the old version of our software.  We apologize for the confusion and regret the need to do this even though it is not viable to continue with this version of the software.   We plan to begin the process tomorrow evening and, if it goes smoothly, we shouldn't be offline for very long.  However, since we have not done this before, we are not sure how smoothly it will go.  We ask your patience as we proceed.

"Only the Best" pop-ups and homepage redirect

7 posts in this topic

I have been battling some spyware picked up probably a month ago. I have run McAfee's virus scan and spyware scan, Ad-Aware's scan and Hijack This (log file to follow)

Whenever I open any program (Microsoft or not), the windows installer comes up and it appears as though it is attempting to install Microsoft Office XP (which I have installed). Now that I finally have my internet homepage re-directed, each time this happens I get a message that something has attempted to change my web settings and the option to reject the changes (thank you, McAfee) I believe that if I did not reject the changes, my homepage would be changed to res://cbrnb.dll/index.html#37049. Further, when I am on the web, I get pop-ups with a title bar of "Only the Best".

Here is my second log file:

When I ran Hijack This, I "fixed" several of the R1 and R0 entries that refer to the undesireable web page and it's dll. I also had some of the BHO's listed as spyware -- which I fixed, and I notice they are no longer showing up in the list. I was not able to determine which of the O4 files needed fixed. Also, after I fixed the R1 and R0 files, they just came back after I opened another program and the Windows Installer attempted to do it's thing.

There is one remaining BHO I was not able to find on the list. It refers to C:\Windows\System32\addgh.dll.

Finally, I keep losing the shell.dll out of my C:\Windows\System32 directory. I have some old software (has not been recently updated) that uses this file in this location. Don't know if it's related or not, but it seems like it started happening at about the same time.

Actually, I didn't realize how long the Ad-Aware log is. I will send it if required, but it showed that I have CoolWebSearch. I "fixed it", and CWShredder didn't seem to find anything, but from the Hijack This log, it looks like I am still infected. Here is the order of programs I ran before running the log above:

- McAfee Spyware search (nothing found)

- Updated AdAware and ran (found CoolWebSearch)

- Looked for updates to CWShredder, didn't find any, ran (nothing found)

- Ran Hijack This, didn't fix anything

I have my web page to the point where I am controlling where it goes, but every time I open something it attempts to re-direct. I am still getting pop-ups on the internet, and I am still losing my Shell.dll file.

Hello please download About:Buster and unzip it to your desktop. Don´t run it yet.

1 You already have Adaware installed. Make sure it's up to date. Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. You should now see Reference File # : 01R333 18.07.2004 or higher listed.

2 Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.

3. Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called "Network Security Service". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. This service is installed by the malware. If this service is not listed go ahead with the next step.

4. Reboot to Safe Mode

How to start the computer in

5. Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.

Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"

Click "Apply" then "OK"

6.CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

C:\WINDOWS\addwl32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3bf.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbrnb.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\addgh.dll

8. Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

9. Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

10. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Thanks for your help and quick response.

Below is the hijack this log. I was unable to save the About:Buster log. When I ran it, everything on my desktop disappeared, and neither the start button or local file button on my keyboard was responsive. There were several things that it corrected.

Good job.

This program BackWeb lets you connect directly to sites offering specials on hp paper ink etc. Its not nessessary and to SWI is adware.

If you want to be in contact or get advertisements Ok just reinstall this component from the printer's cd or remove it thru add/remove in control panel and fix the registry entry with hjt:

O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Good luck :D
