Hi everyone!

I recently started a summer intern job and moved my PC from school to my new apartment. A week after having my new cable modem in perfect functioning order, I found I could not access the internet! Time Warner Cable (Road Runner) service walked me through the basic Network Connections details... They said everything appeared to be set up correctly, but suggested that something else could be wrong with my machine (the service tech said something about a "bad Winsock.dll file"... yeah, right, whatever).

Here's what I've done so far:

My first attempt:1) Ran a virus scan and removed W32.Beagle.X virus
2) Ran Ad-aware
3) Ran a W32.Beagle.X removal tool which found no virus left on my machine
4) Tried to use a restore point only to find them all gone

My second attempt:1) Ran an HJT log (v1.98.0).
2) Ran LSP-fix (link here: http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm)
3) Ran Spybot S&D (v1.3)
4) Ran another HJT log.

Unfortunately, I still can't get to the internet!

Anyone care to help a distressed damsel?

First, from Add/Remove programs, uinstall new net. If there is no entry for it, removal instructions can be found on the newnet website.

Then uninstall Kazaa. This is a regular vermin farm, and it is estimated that about half the files on the network are infected with something nasty!

You also have the sasser worm! A tool for removal can be found here or here

Please post a followup Hijack this log, and say if your problems persist.

Hey dave38,

Thanks for helping me with my computer difficulties.

Last night I ran the new.net removal tool and as I expected, it disappeared from the HJT log.

I received your post this morning. I d/led both of the scans that you recommended and took them to my computer at lunch. The McAfee tool found two instances of the SirCam virus in .dll files and deleted them. I then ran the Symantec scan and it did not find the Sasser worm.

I am communicating at work and taking things home with me to try to fix my computer since I have no internet connection.

I am attaching the HJT scan from after the new.net removal and then the latest scan after the virus scan/removal.

Thanks for all your help. I will be out of town this weekend but will be checking up on postings.

Thanks again dave38!

I forgot to bring my latest HJT log but the things you asked me to remove are gone. I removed what you suggested using HJT and then rebooted and deleted what was left of them. There was no improvement to my internet situation.

Please post a followup Hijack this log, and say exactly what errors occur when you try to connect.
Does the modem dial out?

Dear dave38,

Unfortunately, I won't be able to get you a log file until tomorrow. I come in to work everyday, take your suggestions, go home and try them, and then come back the next day.

I am using a cable modem not a dial-up. However, I did take my computer to my parents to try the dial-up and that did not work. It did dial out but could not establish a connection when checking my password.

I'm going to try surfing the web with an IP address for google tonight to see if it works. If so, someone thought it would be a registry problem.

Thanks for your continued help and support. This is starting to drive me bonkers.

Sincerely,
 Damsel in Distress

Here is my current HJT log. When I try to open IE it returns "Page Cannot Be Displayed" as if it were not connected to the internet. My AIM instant messenger cannot connect and my Eudora email cannot connect. Hope this helps, I'm starting to get pretty frustrated, my roadrunner bill just came and 3 weeks of the month my computer hasn't been able to use the service...this Thursday makes a month :weep: .

...for those few who may find this thread in the future (via "Search")...

FWIW, "Damsel in Distress" did indeed get her Windows Millennium machine back up/running on the Internet (without having to re-image the hard-drive)!

She did much of the work on her own, so, my details of the repair below may not be absolutely exact, but here's goes anyway...

o With the HJT logs and help from this forum, she was able to remove the original spyware/virus/registry problems; Thanks a bunch "Dave38"! ;-) (see info above).

o After her last post above (July 20th), a buddy of mine visited her and decided to "help" by removing "Dial-Up Networking" from her machine (his original intent was to remove, then reinstall it)... Unfortunately, after removal of DUN, much of the networking stuff got messed up (and it was not apparent to him on how to put it back).

o Fortunately, running the LSP-Fix / WinsockFix repair tool(s) brought back much of the standard networking selections, with one important exception: the TCP/IP settings for the installed NIC card were now "greyed-out" (unselectable)! The PC reverted into a mode where it now wanted to connect to the internet using the 1394 firewire card! 8-(

o The good news here is that a subsequent install of the latest Realtek device driver for the ethernet card brought back the (previously "greyed-out") TCP/IP selections!

o After this, she used Winipcfg to check her connectivity... At first, it didn't look good... she kept getting hit with a "DHCP Server Unavailable" msg when clikcing on the "renew ip address" button. The simple fix for this was an AC power reset of the cable modem itself.

She's since installed a good software firewall and updated all her anti-virus stuff with the latest/greatest signatures... She' back on line and so far, so good!

Bottom line is, if your machine get knocked off the internet, don't fret too much... go ahead and rip out the spyware/malware, but be prepared to massage your network settings a bit...

Hope this helps someone (in the future)! Good Luck! :-)
