Hello,

Having trouble with unwanted toolbars, both in the task bar and in the search area of Internet Explorer. Also getting adult oriented web sites popping up during normal surfing. I have downloaded and ran Spybot and have read the FAQ. Here is my HijackThis log...

Hello metal1,

You have quit a few infections showing.

First off, I recommend removing SpyKiller. It gives false positives to get you to buy it.

Make sure that you check Spybot for updates before you run it.

I'd Also Recommend you Download AdAware, Another good Antispyware Program From http://www.lavasoftu...pport/download/.
Install The Program and Run it. Make Sure You Click the "Check for Updates" Button before starting a scan.

Before you do a Scan, set up AdAware by clicking the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Click Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and find:

"Window Search" And "WinTools" and remove (uninstall) them.
You will be given a security code to insert, do so
And reboot when done.

Open Hijackthis, click Scan, then put a check next to the following entries:

Now Close all open Windows and browsers (have only HJT open) and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot to safe mode (tap F8 while restarting) and delete these folders:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\
C:\Program Files\WindowsSA
C:\Program Files\SpyKiller

And these files:

C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe,

Then reboot normally.

Let's see also if you show a Look2Me infection.
A tool has been made by Option^Explicit and freeatlast to find and remove it.

Please download VX2Finder from this link, and save it to your Desktop.

http://downloads.sub...Finder(126).exe

Run Vx2Finder click on the *click to find VX2.BetterInternet* button. Then click *make log*.

Please copy and paste the contents of the log into your next reply here, along with a new HJT log.
(There is a newer version of HJT out)
Open HJT, click Config... then Misc Tools, then Check for Update online, and get v1.98
Or you can get it here:
http://www.spywarein.../HijackThis.exe

First of all...THANK YOU AUTODAD!!! This has been driving me crazy. I'd take you out for a cold beverage of your choice if I could.

From your instructions,

I thought I had removed spykiller already. I think it is completely gone now.

I ran AdAware, and it found 130 items and cleaned them all. Ran it and spybot again with no hits.

Removed WINSA and WINTools.

I think I got all of the HJT items, and a new log is below.

I was not able to delete C:\program files\toolbar\ in safe mode. It said "Cannot delete "Temp". Access Denied." I was able to delete the rest of the items.

Here is the HJT log:

This entry can be fixed in HJT:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

Here is some free protection you should consider:
Download and install:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies.

IESPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
