I have downloaded and I have run both the latest versions of Spybot and Adaware. I have Spywareblaster installed.

I update Spybot, Adaware, and Spywareblaster every time I sit down at the computer, which is basically once a day.

I have Google's Toolbar popup blocker installed. I have the Windows XP Home firewall clicked, but that's the only firewall. I am a home computer, not a network or a business. I have no virus protection installed, because I normally surf only a few safe, known sites every day.

And I'm still getting popups. Mainly they say "University of Phoenix--Microsoft Internet Explorer", but there are others (no porn, though, just ads). And they don't happen all the time, just sometimes, mainly when I open a new Internet Explorer window, but also sometimes when I simply Preview Reply on a message board. So can someone please tell me how I get rid of them?

I don't know enough about it to know how much of this is malware.

Hi,
First thing to do is ...

Update Ad-aware's Reference File: instructions Posted Image here

Required Step: Posted Image Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan

Note: do not run Ad-Aware yet, just update and reconfigure.

Next:

Reconfigure Windows Explorer to show Hidden Files: [required step]
Open the Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options - View [tab]:

Scroll down to the "Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Display the contents of system folders".

Scroll down to the "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Show hidden files and folders", Ok the prompt
Uncheck: "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck: "Hide protected operating system files" Ok the Prompt, click Apply

Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Next:

Close all open windows, rescan with HijackThis
Place a check in each of the following then click "Fix checked".

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310}_ - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4CDE3A58-BF42-0796-875F-10550BD57E4F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mujmnw.dll
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {986DDE35-E955-11D0-A707-000000521958} - http://69.56.176.75/webplugin.cab

Then reboot, on restart, restart in Safe Mode [required step - see "How To" below]

Start | Run (type) "%temp%" (no quotes)
Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

Open Windows Explorer locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ngmux.exe <--this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mujmnw.dll <--this file

While still in Safe Mode, run Ad-Aware and fix everything it finds.

Restart normally and then ... Download Posted Image HijackThis! 1.98

After the above, reboot, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log ...

I have no virus protection installed

Bad idea! Download Posted Image AVG 6.0 Anti Virus [freeware]
Note: that's the one I use ...

Okay, I have now done all that. Here is the new Hijackthis log. Did you mean for me to post it right after I did all that, or did you mean "wait until you see whether the proposed fix actually worked, until you see whether you're still getting popups"? I just now got back online, so I dunno whether I'm still getting popups yet or not.

At any rate, here it is. Thanks.

Hi,
Close all open windows, rescan with HijackThis
Place a check in each of the following then click "Fix checked".

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310}_ - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)

Then reboot, (after the Desktop loads) Control Panel| Internet Options
Programs [tab], click the "Reset web settings" button, click Apply\Ok

Otherwise your log is clean ...

I would suggest adding some "Defense" to your system ...

Wow! I have implemented everything, and so far (knock on wood) no more popups. [does happy dance]

*PLUS*, all this seems to have miraculously removed a Google hijacker that months ago installed itself on Google, so that when you put in a Google search string, what you got was Page 1 of hits that tried to direct you to some other search engine, I forget what the name was. But, like, if you put in "porcelain manufacturer", you'd get 10 hits saying cheerful things like, "Find all your porcelain manufacturer needs at [some dot com address or other]!". So I had been using Google.com as my home page, but after this stupid thing happened, I switched to Google.ca, which got around it, but it was still irritating, knowing it was there on my system but Adaware, Spybot, and Spywareblaster couldn't seem to do anything about it.

Anyway, hooray! It's gone, too, as well as the "University of Phoenix" and "Free Laptop!" popups, and I am truly grateful.

Who are you guys, anyway? Besides the Men In White Hats... :D

[cue Commissioner Gordon: "I don't know who he is behind that mask of his, but I know that we need him..."]

Many props to you, WinHelp2002, for helping people here like this.
