Dubolom.com has hijacked my IE 6.0 browser. The recommended steps have been taken (Adaware 6.0, CWShredder, HijackThis, Windows XP Service Pack 1 has been installed, MS Java VM has been replaced with Sun Java, and the FAQ section has been reviewed with no unusual findings).

CWShredder and HijackThis successfully remove the 5 "R1" values associated with Dubolom.com (listed below), but only temporarily. Upon restart (or after about 10 minutes), the dubolum files return.

Using the manual removal instructions found at www.pchell.com/support/dubolom.shtml (as well as the www.dubolom.com site) also do not seem to have any effect.

The following is the HijackThis log file...
Any suggestions you can provide are certainly appreciated!

Hi and welcome...

Please, move HiJackThis.Exe to a permanent folder...
For example: C:/HiJAckThis/HiJAckThis.exe

Now, close all programs and browsers, open HiJackthis and tick the next entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://dubolom.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://dubolom.com/index.htm
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://dubolom.com/index.htm

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://dubolom.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://dubolom.com/index.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 192.168.001.002

O2 - BHO: AlxTB BHO - {F1FABE79-25FC-46de-8C5A-2C6DB9D64333} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\AlxTB2.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Alexa - {3CEFF6CD-6F08-4E4D-BCCD-FF7415288C3B} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\SHDOCVW.DLL

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IEengine] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEengine.exe

O8 - Extra context menu item: Alexa Web Search - http://client.alexa....ions/search.htm

O8 - Extra context menu item: Get Alexa Data - http://client.alexa....ns/sitedata.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: Mail to a Friend... - http://client.alexa....ions/mailto.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: See Related Links - http://client.alexa....ons/related.htm

O8 - Extra context menu item: Write a Review... - http://client.alexa....ions/review.htm
O9 - Extra button: Alexa (HKLM)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Alexa Toolbar (HKLM)

O16 - DPF: {69A72A8A-84ED-4A75-8CE7-263DBEF3E5D3} (BrowserProxy4 Class) - http://download.alex...ents/Alexa7.cab

Now hit fix...

Reboot and delete the next file:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEengine.exe

Now post me a fresh log...

Good Luck...

Thanks for the quick reply Quinstar!

I have removed the mentioned items (with the exception of the Alexa items - I actually uninstalled that shortly after my post - I was curious to see if was somehow affecting the removal of dubolom items).

Everything seems to be working OK now! Here is the freshly updated HijackThis log:

Jup... It looks very clean to me... :D

Read this:

Protection after fix... These are recommandations...
download and install:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies...
http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all...
http://www.staff.uiu...rce.htm#IESPYAD

Both are very small free programs that you run once, and then just occasionally to check for updates...

And also see:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
