I followed your instructions as well as I could. There were a few things I could not do, such as run Ad-Aware from safe mode, so I did it from regular. Some files you had asked me to delete were not there...at least as far as I could see.

Here is the new log. Again thanks for your help.

Hi,
Close all open windows, rescan with HijackThis
Place a check in each of the following then click "Fix checked".

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwremp] C:\WINDOWS\System32\btmfwvot.exe

Then reboot, on restart, restart in Safe Mode [required step - see "How To" below]

Start | Run (type) "%temp%" (no quotes)
Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

Open Windows Explorer locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\btmfwvot.exe <--this file

After the above, reboot, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log ...

such as run Ad-Aware from safe mode

Why? Ad-Aware runs in Safe Mode ...

Note: I see you are using 2 pop-up blockers? Why?
1) O3 - Toolbar: PopUpCop -
2) O3 - Toolbar: Pa&nicware Pop-Up Stopper -

Hi again...

I am running a Windows XP Home and perhaps some other users had windows open when I did the previous scan. This time I logged everyone else off before running Hijack.

To answer your questions about not being able to run Ad-Aware in safe mode yesterday, I couldn't find the Ad Aware icon that is usually on the desktop. When I tried to find it by going to Start and then All Programs, I clicked on it, but for reasons I do not understand, there was nothing in the folder to click.

As for two pop up blockers, it is weird. I use Panicware on my desktop, and it works very well. The other users on the computer cannot get it to work on their desktops. I tried loading a different stopper on their desktops, thus the two pop up blockers.

What concerns me as much as anything here is the backdoor.sbvot virus I have and can't seem figure out how to get rid of. Hopefully you can help me. We have gotten rid of a ton of adware so far though, and that is good. My son's Sidewinder controller for his Flight Simulator keeps opening with Windows, and I'd like to put an end to that too. I have a hunch we use a lot of system resources on startup for no particular reason other than we don't know what we are doing, and it is bogging down the computer.

Anyway...here is the latest Hijack log:

Hi,
Your log is clean now ... good job!

Last Step:

1) Empty the Recycle Bin
2) "Flush System Restore" (see "How To" below)
Basically turn off System Restore, reboot, run a full (updated) NAV scan, reboot and turn System Restore back on and create a new Restore Point.

How To: Configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files

I would suggest adding some "Defense" to your system ...
Posted Image How To: Prevent this from happening again?

What concerns me as much as anything here is the backdoor.sbvot virus

Where? it's not showing up in your log ... see if NAV still detects it after flushing System Restore.

My son's Sidewinder controller for his Flight Simulator keeps opening with Windows

Disable "SWTray" via Msconfig
Start | Run (type) msconfig
Click on the Startup tab and uncheck: "SWTray" (and reboot)
Upon restart, go thru Start | Programs and see if the shortcut there activates the controller and works properly. If so go back to Msconfig, place a check back in "SWTray" and reboot. Rescan with HijackThis and "fix" the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SideWinderTrayV4] C:\PROGRA~1\MI948F~1\GAMECO~1\Common\SWTrayV4.exe
Note: this does not delete the file just removes the entry from Startup.

I have a hunch we use a lot of system resources on startup

You can go thru your Startups and remove any unneeded ...
Identify StartUp Apps
http://www.pacs-port...tup_content.php (Pacman's Portal)
http://www.answersth...es/tasklist.htm
http://www.3feetunde...artup/list.html

You can also shut off any unneeded "Services" via:
http://www.blkviper..../servicecfg.htm

Lastly, after the above run a Ad-Aware scan on each user on the machine.

Thanks. I think everything is fine now. One last question....

I managed to find a way to do it, but when I click on Start then All Programs and then Applications, I do not find Microsoft Explorer. I know it should be there, but it isn't. How do I get it back into the Start menu?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

How do I get it back into the Start menu?

Right-click on a blank space on the Taskbar, select: Properties
Click the Start Menu tab, select: Start Menu, then the Customize button
Select: "Show on Start Menu" = Internet Explorer

You can find several more options ... Posted Image Download: Tweak UI
