I have been trying to fix this for two weeks and have tried to follow all the rules of the site.

I have run CWSshredder, AdAwareplus, Spybot S&D, Aluria and XoftSpy and have SpywareBlaster running. I also have run about:buster from Ducky in safe mode. I think that covers it. Not fixed.

Here is my HijackThis Log. I really appreciate your assistance.

Freeatlast: Thanks for the superquick response.

Here is the FindNFix Log file:

╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗*** Note! ***╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗
The list will produce a small database of files that will match certain criteria.
You must know how to ID the file based on the filters provided in
the scan, as not all the files flagged are bad.
Ex: read only files, s/h files, last modified date. size, etc.
The filters provided should help narrow down the list, and hopefully
pinpoint the culprit.
Along with that, registry scan logged at the end should match the
corresponding file(s) listed.
╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗
Unless the file match the entire criteria, it should not be pointed to remove
without attempting to confirm it's nature!
╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗╗
At times there could be several (legit) files flagged, and/or duplicate culprit file(s)!
If in doubt, always search the file(s) and properties according to criteria!

The file(s) found should be moved to \FINDnFIX\"junkxxx" Subfolder

Well done!
File identified!
This will take couple or more steps to fix.(Although won't be all done yet)
Be sure to Follow the next set of steps carefully, in
the exact order specified:

1.)
*Get ready to restart your computer.
- Open the FINDnFIX\Keys1\ Subfolder And
DoubleClick on the "FIX.bat" file.
-You will get a prompt preparing for auto-restart in 10 seconds.
-Let it restart!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2.)
On restart, Go to Start/Search, and find:
"MSM.DLL" (in System32 folder; as it should be visible)
-When found, RightClick on the "MSM.DLL" file
And select -> Cut...
Immediately Open this Subfolder:
C:\FINDnFIX\junkxxx <-
RightClick inside it and select -> Paste
hit 'ok' when/if asked on 'read only' file move prompt.
*Be sure the file is now here: \junkxxx\MSM.DLL
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3.)
When done, Go back up one level to the main C:\FINDnFIX folder and
Run the -> "RESTORE.bat" file ,
It will run and generate new log (log2.txt)
Post it here.
===================================================
*Note:
Do not change/move around or
tamper with any of the file(s) folder(s) and path
included in the 'FINDnFIX' folder.

All's well as planned! ;)

Nearly done!
Last step(s):

-Open the FINDnFIX\Files2< Subfolder:
Run the -> "ZIPZAP.bat" file.
It will quickly clean the rest and
will create a zipped copy of the bad file(s) in the same
folder (named as-- junkxxx.zip) and open your email
client with instructions:
Simply drag and drop the 'junkxxx.zip' file from
the folder into the mail message and submit
to the specified addresses! Thanks!

(*Please include the link in your mail to the board
that assisted you, so any errors in the process could be traced back!)

When done, restart your computer and
Delete and entire 'FINDnFIX' file+Subfolder(s)
From C:\

For the remaining problems (if any), run any and all
removal tools once again as they should work properly now!
In particular,
Latest CWShredder.exe and fully updated Ad-Aware!

Feel free to post follow up hijackthis log when done! ;)

Freeatlast:

Here is my new HJT Log. Everything seemed to go as planned in your last post, but when I ran (i) CWSShredder afterwards, it picked up CWS.searchx and 3 IE registry value issues, (ii) AdAware, it picked up about 11 CWS items (which it deleted), and (iii) SpyBot, it continually picks up 5 DSO Exploit items which it deletes, but which would show up if I ran it again immediately after. In any event, notwithstanding the fact that about:blank shows up as an R0 value in this HJT file, it did not hijack IE (so I guess thats good). What now? Thank you!!!!

You just have some leftovers:
First, Disable Ad-Aware/Ad-watch completely

-Fix checked in hijackthis:

*R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\J
ason\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
*R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Jason\
LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
*R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Main,Start Page = about:blank
*R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\Jason\
LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
*R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Search,CustomizeSearch =
*R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Main,Local Page =

Restart your computer, Reset IE home page/options to defaults.
Go to start/run/type:
%temp%
Empty entire contents of temp folder.
Delete all temp internet files in IE options as well.
Run the tools again and you should be all set.
Ad-Aware may keep 'finding' tracking cookies etc, can be ignored.
*SpyBot/DSO Exploit is a known 'bug'-ignore!

All's well, otherwise!
Be sure to keep it that way ;)

Freeatlast - I will do as you suggest just as soon as I get home from work. Thanks so much for your help.

One last question...there are a series of postings on pages 13 - 15 of the "Important Topics: Pinned- About:Blank by Rubber Ducky" (by DJ Barcode, trousers and joeb) that talk about identifying a secret hidden file(s) in the System32 folder (57,344 bytes, logd.dll and ctIndio.dll) which are impossible to actually find and delete without either accessing your HD with a USB cable, renaming files, etc. - this is described there as killing the "root" of the problem, instead of fixing the aftereffects. Is killing that "momma" file effectively what we have been doing using FindNFix?
Again, thanks so much for your help.

Well, there are different approaches to accomplish the same.
Not all are safe or accurate, but most pertain to the same set of pests!
What I'm doing is IDing the file in a way that
newer versions of windows, such as 2K/XP no
longer use.. e.g Dos, but the same indexing
SubSystem still exists ;)

Only 16 bit command lines can *see these files:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\
msm.dll Thu Jul 8 2004 7:49:34p A...R 57,344 56.00 K

And report the 'discrepency':
» Access denied « ..................... MSM.DLL .....57344 08.07.2004

And give you the exact creation date/size/time etc.
Trying to do the same with cmd.exe would yield:
"The system cannot find the file specified.."
e.g. File doesn't exist!
And same for-- Search files in windows!

A lot of it has to do with the functions
used by Windows to verify whether file exists.

That- Along with registry scan to retrieve the data and the
combined fix that ensures the responsible key
is being cleaned and restored to the defaults=kills the root of
the problem safely.

File is gone+the offending registry data! ;)

There are also several different variants
that require different steps/tools, etc..

Yours is history! :D

Freeatlast. I think something is not quite right. Followed your last steps to a "t", but when I run AdAware+, I am still getting CWS detections. I delete them, and if I run it again, there they are again. Also, even though I fix/checked the R1's and R0's in HJT, they keep coming back when I rerun HJT. So...I am going to post the latest HJT log for your review, and also the AdAware+ log so you can see what its finding. Thanks for taking the time. NewJay.

Freeatlast - Not to pile on, but now Norton is picking up a "trojan.bookmark.gen" virus that it deletes, but multiple related .dll files seem to be created in a subdirectory of "C:\Recycler" (is that whole file set created by the virus..whats in Recycler? I never noticed it before). I think the AdAware log I posted in my previous post shows this as:

Anyway, thought I should highlight it. In advance, I really do appreciate your assistance. You do us all a great service.

Hi there! :D
Did yoiu actually look where these files are located?

Ex:

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-665928937-4154705455-337194567-1008\

:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D

All are in your system restore folder, and/or recycle bin!

And... all are leftovers of previous
malware. not related to the variant we removed!

Fisr, delete all Hijackthis backups: (config>backups)
Run it and fix checked:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {96565701-7917-4587-9467-0ECA647609D7} - c:\system volume information\_restore{b37680b2-ba0a-4e5d-bf30-83e44c588624}\rp56\a0002567.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Multimedia Codecs] C:\WINDOWS\System32\mcc.exe

Reboot and delete this new trojan!
WINDOWS\System32\mcc.exe< file!

Disable Norton and Ad-Aware!

1.) Disable system restore, restart and
re-enable it to get rid of the pests that are archived there!

Disabling or enabling Windows XP System Restore

2.) Empty your recycle bin!
Disable Norton's bin protection--if enabled.
Empty your %temp% folder again, as indicated earlier !

Restart and re-enable all back!

Good luck ;)

Thanks of course for putting up with my endless questions.
I have done as you suggested (several times...) but something still doesnt seem right.

I run Adaware and get this (everytime I reboot, AdWatch tells me that changes to my registry values are taking place):

Started deep registry scan

Here is my latest HJT Log (if you tell me its okay, I won't ask anymore)
Its just that I only know enough to be dangerous. And a strange thing happened when I tried to open Notepad to view my logfile...I cannot get that program to open. So this is copied from Wordpad.

Freeatlast - scratch the question about Notepad, I read another one of your posts that said that CWS corrupts Notepad, so I copied it in from the FindandFix website and now it works again.

Good move with notepad. At least that's settled.

However, Ad-Aware and hijackthis log indicate possible reinfection.
I don't see the obvious file(s) on your logs, but just to play it safe re-download the FINDnFIX package from my sig, run and post the log.

Meanwhile, try to fix the indicated files/entries manually before running and posting the log, if they return later-- that's a sure sign of reinfection.
(which I've seen before!)

Data : "file://C:\DOCUME~1\Jason\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html"

Go to start/run/type:
%temp%
Seach for sp.html and delete if found.

Delete all hijackthis backups again and fix checked all
-R1-R0 lines.

Before running the "log.bat" file, open the FINDnFIX\Files2\ Subfolder
And double-click on this file: -> "last.reg", hit 'yes' on the merge prompt!
That key should clean the entries reported by Ad-Aware!

After performing all the steps above, run the log.bat and post the results (log.txt) along with new hijackthis log!

P.S
Disable Ad-Watch completely, as it was confirmed to interfere with changes and cleanup of browser pages.
e.g Each time you'll try to reset, it will alert you of changes and revert back to previous settings!
When all is confirmed clean , you can re-enable it again!

Freeatlast: I think this ordeal is over. When I boot, no registry changes occur like before. Also, I caught the "sp" in the temp file when I rebooted in safe mode, and deleted it there. When I run Adaware, zero items show up (!!!!!!!) Here is my FnF file.

Well done! :D

Delete the FINDnFIX folder. No longer needed.
That problem is confirmed to be gone!

Next, restart your computer in safe mode, find
and delete this file, if exists:
WINDOWS\System32\mcc.exe< (unless previously deleted)

As for it's startup entry, delete it manually.
ht 1.98 still has some hiccups.. but it's being updated
soon, hopefully (the stuff at the end reported 'missing'
isn't really missing...)

Open Windows registry from start/run/type:
regedit

Expand these folders:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Hilite and select >run
Inspect the values on the right pane.

Find the one referencing the..."Multimedia Codecs"...mcc.exe",
RightClick and delete it!
(*Note! If it's not found, that could be another bug in ht)

When done, close regedit, re-run
hijackthis, delete all it's backups, scan
and post the--hopefully last log!

Hmmmm. Lets see....do I trust a volunteer samaritan who has spent the last 6 days patiently working through and solving this nasty problem with me or a foul mouth johnny-come-lately? You wouldn't be selling anything, would ya? Tough call.

Ms. Freeatlast....Thank you for taking so much time with me on this problem...this is a great community and resource. Glad you chose my post. Contribution forthcoming. This is me: :D

For the record, I didn't find the sp.html file until I checked the temp folder when in Safe Mode (otherwise I just didnt see it). Not sure why.
