Hi everyone; I'm new here.

I'm fairly computer literate and moderately spyware paranoid, so I never download suspicious things and update/run both adaware and spybot on a monthy basis.

This morning I was at an innocuous site and suddenly got the fatal IE error (the one where it gives you the option to send an error report). Ever since, I get an identical error every time I try to start explorer. Likewise, running something like windows update or clicking on a link in email will crash explorer. I CAN get it to run by just opening up a window and typing into the URL box manually, however trying to make a new window (File->New->Window) will cause the same crash. I think this may be hijack related because I normally have the google toolbar installed and it's not present when simply opening a window and manually browsing. Since some jacks work similarly to such a toolbar, perhaps whatever's causing my problem is also not loading when I "manually" browse.

I should also note that even when "manually" browsing, sometimes it crashes spontaneously when trying to visit a site or download a file. I'm using Opera right now to avoid problems. I've tried reinstalling IE to no avail.

Adaware and spybot found no problems. I have a hijackthis log if anyone could take a look at it for me.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
~Jeremy

Problem solved!

Though, I'm not sure why. I decided (rather brashly) to fix everything that came up when running hijackthis and make backups. This fixed the problem, so I reenabled everything, planning to enable/disable stuff methodically to find out which was causing the problem. Well, even after re-enabling everything, the problem didn't come back. I also noted that my google toolbar never came back even after re-enabling its BHO. These two things I don't understand, but I'm just happy everything works again. Here's the original log if anyone cares to look at it:
