I have all the symptoms of the QHosts trojan but when I run the tool that is supposed to fix it, it says it's not on my system. My HOSTS file also looks clean. Not really sure what to do. I've tried flushing my DNS, looking for the reg keys (but I can't find them) and running every virus scan I could find. Everything comes up clean, but I still can't get to google.com, altavista.com, or yahoo.com but can get to them through a mirror site.

Check out http://securityrespo...jan.qhosts.html

Ensure you have followed ALL of the directions. It also may give you some clues as to what to check next.

You dont mention if you created a new HOSTS file, but I would give that a try. Looking at your log, Im suspicious of the following:

N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "http://www.platypus....h/800x600.html"); (C:\Documents and Settings\Meghan\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\2aytnokf.slt\prefs.js)

N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", "engine://C%3A%5CProgram%20Files%5CNetscape%5CNetscape%206%5Csearchplugins%5CSBWeb_01.src"); (C:\Documents and Settings\Meghan\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\2aytnokf.slt\prefs.js)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3DAE3D20-E63C-7EB4-D357-64550DA0266A} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gpuzrsd.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Utvqbthw] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dwmfx.exe

A Google of gpuzrsd.dll and dwmfx.exe comes up with nothing at all. Utvqbthw is gibberish as best as I can tell and a no name BHO is hard to figure out.

asiina,
First thing to do is ...

Reconfigure Windows Explorer to show Hidden Files: [required step]
Open the Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options - View [tab]:

Scroll down to the "Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Display the contents of system folders".

Scroll down to the "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Select: "Show hidden files and folders", Ok the prompt
Uncheck: "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Uncheck: "Hide protected operating system files" Ok the Prompt, click Apply

Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Next:

Close all open windows, rescan with HijackThis
Place a check in each of the following then click "Fix checked".

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3DAE3D20-E63C-7EB4-D357-64550DA0266A} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gpuzrsd.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Utvqbthw] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dwmfx.exe

Then reboot, on restart, restart in Safe Mode [required step - see "How To" below]

Start | Run (type) "%temp%" (no quotes)
Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

Open Windows Explorer locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dwmfx.exe <--this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gpuzrsd.dll <--this file

After the above, reboot, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log ...

How strange. I had followed the instructions on that site before and it hadn't found anything, but when I checked my hosts file this time google and altavista were there. Well, thank you for the help anyway.
